Marvel Won't Bring Jeremy Renner Back as Hawkeye?

Posted: May 15th, 2013 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Marvel WonSubmit Comment
We recently reported that Marvel is considering replacing Chris Hemsworth in future "Thor" and "The Avengers" installments. The reason is because the actor isn't happy with his small salary when his movies are bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars. While it's still unclear what will happen with Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, it now looks like Jeremy Renner may not return as Hawkeye.

It all started when Renner told the press that he wasn't happy with his character's involvement in "The Avengers," stating: "For 90% of the movie, I'm not the character I signed on to play. It's kind of a vacancy. [He's] not even a bad guy, because there's not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot."

Marvel doesn't like it when their actors trash their movies, which is why we'll likely never see Hugo Weaving or Mickey Rourke return, despite the fact that they have multi-picture deals.

While this has yet to be confirmed, it's pretty obvious that Marvel isn't happy with Renner. Not only is Hawkeye not included in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which brought back almost the entire SHIELD team, but Marvel head Kevin Feige and "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon have yet to mention anything about the character.

We know that Whedon plans to replace some characters in "The Avengers 2" with new superheroes. It's starting to look like the first casualty will be Renner. And while Hawkeye may make an appearance, there's a good chance that the role will be re-cast. That may not be a bad thing, because Renner may be tired of the role and it will give Marvel an opportunity to include Hawkeye in its "Agents of SHIELD" TV series.

How could Mickey Rourke have a multi-picture deal? His character is all flavors of dead.

And the actors wouldn't bash the films, if they weren't treated like sh*t. Marvel needs to get off its high horse.

It's Pump Up The Volume, btw.

@BlackDynamite

Agreed. Furthermore, It's not like Renner was trashing the movie per se; he simply felt his character was extremely limited given the storied circ*mstances. And he's right. If this source is accurate (big question mark there) then Marvel needs to stop getting their panties in a wad just because one of their actors desires a more fully developed role.

I'm sure Renner is all game to come back for a sequel, along with Evans, Hemsworth and the ScarJo. Just pay them f*cking proper, Marvel. Nothing ridiculous, but at least a salary in proportion to the films' success.

Hawkeye was rad in the comics. He has personality and charm. The movie version is a wet fish.

I blame Whedon.

Hawkeye was a minor character development casualty in AVENGERS as per Whedon on the movie commentary.

You have to realize the magnitude of Whedon's load of making this movie. He had to make 4 protagonist (who everyone paid to see), 4 minor supplemental characters with ALL having their small story arc, while keeping in mind all the background info/events from all their previous movies letting them go against a formidal villain that would test/ showcase their strengths for all the mainstream/ fanboys to see & enjoy...I had to admit the only person who could pull this off would've been comic book geek...with a background in juggling multiple characters...that also co-scripted the screenplay....with the WHOLE backing of Marvel on a guy that had only directed ONE movie before. F*****ck!

Apart from all this, he ALSO had to squeeze ANOTHER complete origin & arc for ONE of the 2nd string Marvel characters?!...but he sorta half-assed pulled it off anyways!! Come-da-f*ck-on!!...Thats why that guy has my respect.

And now Renner is "crying like a little bitch with a skinned knee" about his role?! F*ck that guy!

I just think about the whole ordeal of getting it made & how it came out & I just think: What. A. Bitch!!

It kinda reminds me of Moore's comment about Snyder's version of WATCHMEN...he said something like that's the closest anyone would get to his material...this from a guy that has been f*cked over by the long d*ck of Hollywood....repeatedly. That was Moore's version of a compliment.

Point is, AVENGERS was as close to a comic book adaptation anyone will ever see...that was a HUGE success. Any little bitch complsints falls off the wayside. So here's to part 2.

Renner sounds like the kind of guy who when he finally gets laid
complains he didnt get enough time on top

Shut da f*ckup and enjoy the ride
You self entitled catchers mitt

Not sure if I should blame the script writer, director, or Renner, but jeezus, Hawkeye was devoid of all personality in Avengers.

After reading his most recent solo comic (its still ongoing, and an excellent read), I truly hope they give him somewhat of a personality if they use him again.
Avirex writes:

His character didn't receive any character development because it was spent on the Black Widow Stripper character. Whedon has a hard on for bitches who beat the sh*t out of guys, which is why she is back in Cap 2 and whatever else.

We totally know what Chris Evans is going to do. He signed a contract for 6 movies. He already did 2, doing 1 at the moment and he has to do 3 more. He'll be busy.

"I'm not the character I signed on to play."

Really Renner?

If you had read the sript before signing, this couldn't happen. Either way, stop complaining.

At ZenShark:

Yeah, I've heard and read all his put downs and being adamant of how he would never watched it, but all that is in 2007-2009 interview; most before the movie was released or shortly after.

I can't really find where I read it (either in a recent movie magazine or online), but I do remember him softening up on his take on WATCHMEN. Maybe he got convinced by all the good things he heard Snyder got right...maybe?

But it is truly amazing how everyone from Spielberg to Gilliam and all the top rated directors had a hard time adapting and setting up a movie deal to "film the unfilmable"...Snyder had the balls (and pressure) to update the costumes, stream lined its characters/ plot and made it look cool. I still think Manhattan's origin and Rorschach pedophile encounter is flawless...Snyder did real good.

But then he made SUCKER PUNCH...and SPLAT!! LOL
CelluloidMan writes:

At ZenShark:

You were right...I looked it up and found it on Wikipedia and Moore was actually talking about Hayter's screenplay which Tse adapted and was filmed by Snyder...

"Moore has stated he has no interest in seeing Snyder's adaptation; he told Entertainment Weekly in 2008, 'There are things that we did with Watchmen that could only work in a comic, and were indeed designed to show off things that other media can't'. While Moore believes that David Hayter's screenplay was 'as close as I could imagine anyone getting to Watchmen,' he asserted he did not intend to see the film if it were made."

Whooops! My bad...
