Robert Downey Jr Hints at Leaving "Iron Man" Franchise

Robert Downey Jr Hints at Leaving "Iron Man" FranchiseSubmit Comment
A few years ago, Robert Downey Jr said that he plans to play Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes for the rest of his career. But now he's starting to rethink that due to an injury he suffered doing a stunt for "Iron Man 3."

"It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up," he told GQ magazine. "How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun?"

Downey hinted that his plan is not only to stop playing Iron Man, but to stop acting altogether. "Right now I don't have a contract to do anything," he said, adding that it may be the right time to retire.

"The Avengers 2" is already in pre-production in the UK. From what we heard, Iron Man plays an important role in merging "Guardians of the Galaxy" with the rest of the Marvel films, which means that the studio is not ready to let Downey go. It's possible, of course, that the actor is talking about retiring simply as negotiating tactic to get more money.

This Iron Man 4 (come on The Avengers was IM 3) better be awesome or I'm done with these character, wich I believe peaked in part 1.

Retire? Oh please. Downey is only hinting at retiring because he wants the studios to pay more money for his Iron Man role.

Iron Man III must be good. He wouldn't be trying to get more money if it sucked.

he said it himself "Id hate to think someone else can walk in my footsteps so easily." besides he is well aware that he is more or less the face of the avengers. Neither Tjor nor Captain America can hold a flame compared to Iron Man. RDJ is a leading actor he is naturally narcissistic , which is an important trait to instill into the starck character, but its only as believable as it is due tonRDJ. And Im sure marvel wont let him go easily.

Nowhere does this say that Robert Downey is hinting at retiring. He just said he may not continue doing sequels when they stop becoming fun.

Downey's just talking, musing, rambling. What he says today in an interview in an offhand way isn't set in f*cking stone. And he didn't even say he's retiring, he's just saying that perhaps God, his cosmic sponsor, may have been sending him a message: the time has come to slow down a bit.

He IS almost 50, you know?

I think all he meant was that he's going to A. Stop making sequels just to make them for money. That everything eventually gets old and not engaging for him anymore. Reasonable. And B. That's he's acknowledging getting older and that he cant physically keep doing these kinds of roles much longer. Body breaks down easier and injuries he might get in future won't be as easy to recover from etc

I was looking at the pics of Electro from spiderman and for some reason they reminded me of the old Fleer Ultra Spiderman cards. Anyone else remember those? They were awesome!

Why can't he continue playing stark but transition away from iron man? Pass the torch and become a leader, teacher, trainer, tech and arms supplier etc. I think that could be fun for him and allow him to stay involved.

They part wouldn't require as much of a time commitment and less physically demanding. But keep his wit, humor etc. I'd say that's the best compromise.

A lucious fox/Q from bond type character. Who occasionally could help in action for a time here and there in crysis

I think he will stop the franchises soon after The Avengers 3. Those movies are a busy schedule and the he is married with kids. Plus, he probably wants an Oscar already.

Its a play for more money.

But hes perfect as Stark/Iron Man, so I'm not going to say he doesn't deserve it.

It doubt he has nay plans to retire any time soon. Sure, maybe take it a little slower since he's creeping toward the half-century mark.

But he's an actor, he needs to be in front of the camera. Its only natural to think this way after an injury. But once it heals, the feeling of invincibility comes back before long.

That's smart move for RDJ. Get out while people love you and leave them wanting more. He surely knows how to become a legend. But then again, Money will speak louder.

RDJ is iron man I can't see anyone else playing him
Osiris3eagle writes:

All these relatively young actors who claim to be retiring (Ryan Gosling and now Robert Downey Jr) are actually saying they are taking a break. They will be back without a doubt in my mind.
CelluloidMan writes:

Maybe RDJ wants an Oscar...

It's really the only thing he needs. He's headlined major blockbusters, world-wide fame, the accolades...he wants a legit acknowledgement and he won't get it doing the ones he's doing now...

I'm sure he'll be able to get it, if that's what he meant...no doubt in my mind.

I think he's tbh , playing it over and over agin will get boring , it's shame marvel puch out these films every year , my guess is to give these characters a rest 3-4 year until they have better stories ,and the guardians round about is done then back to iron man Thor etc, still think the guardians is such a sh*te idea which should be done by Pixar , just giant raccoons and Statue of Liberty aliens looks Awful just like antman does in that clip I saw a bit ago , now that sucks
