Netflix Teams with Police to Capture Criminals

Netflix Teams with Police to Capture CriminalsSubmit Comment
The cops in North Carolina are starting to use technology in new ways to track down criminals. Detective LG Bear recently explained that he used Netflix to finally arrest a thief responsible for a string of car break-ins which began over four months ago.

According to Bear, he decided to contact Netflix to see if they would help with identifying the location of a stolen television in case one of the criminals turns that TV on and uses the Netflix account on it. The company agreed, and soon enough, that Netflix account was used.

Police quickly located the stolen TV, where they found out that the user purchased it from a man he met through his cousin. Bear went to the house of that man, where he spotted a truck suspected of being involved in the thefts and another truck that contained goods that were reported stolen only 30 minutes earlier.

Moments later, police entered the house and arrested the thief. The house contained stolen TVs, 8 GPS units, 17 power tools, 34 watches and many other items.

Meanwhile, Netflix is proud of themselves for helping. The company updated its Twitter account with a link to the article about the arrest and a caption that reads "stupid criminals."

They use everything for tracking these days. I wouldn't be surprised if they start keeping track of how many times we flush the f*cking toilet or use the washing machine.

A guy named Detective LG looking for...a stolen television? Damn. Existential wonders never cease.

Guess it's a good thing I don't have a Netflix account. Lets me indulge all my favorite hoodrat activities, like dodging child support and trafficking heroin, with lower risk of facing arrest.

Man, what news. The cops tracked access to a Netflix account to locate an television. lol. Not like they haven't done the same for years and years and years, in the case of stolen laptops. Yawn.

Not even sure how this is movie related. Sounds like six degrees of Hollywood to me, and in that case, you can report on the dump I took because the toilet in which I flushed my sh*t was made in Taiwan, and in Taiwan lives a man who works in a factory that makes DVDs which are used to press and distribute Hollywood movies. See, everything is connected to Hollywood in six degrees or less.

Regardless, a far more interesting case I recall is a serial killer caught because the dummy mailed to the police a map locating one of his victims. Police compared the map to other online maps. They determined it originated at Expedia IIRC. They then asked Expedia for ip addresses accessing that particular map area in the given time frame. Boom. Only one ip address was from the area in which the killer operated. Once arrested and charged, the serial killer did the humane thing: he committed suicide.

Point is, police have been doing this sh*t as long as the Internet's been extant. Not news at all.

Anyone who would even think of stealing a car these days is a moron, as it is now easier to catch a car thief than it is for a car their to ply their trade.
