"Oz The Great and Powerful" Earns $150 Million Worldwide, Sequel Moving ForwardPosted: March 11th, 2013 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Disney recently greenlit a sequel to "Oz The Great and Powerful," expecting for the $215 million film to gross at least $80 million on its opening weekend. Those numbers are now in, and it turns out that the studio was right. "Oz" took in an impressive $80.3 million domestically and another $69.9 million overseas for a worldwide total of $150.2 million.
The film ended up becoming the biggest debut of 2013 as well as the third best March domestic opening of all time, behind "Alice in Wonderland" ($116.1 million) and "The Hunger Games ($152.5 million).
After adding the marketing budget, Disney spent over $300 million on "Oz The Great and Powerful." But at this point, the film is on track to becoming very profitable. It has a 60% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.
"Oz" crushed Bryan Singer's $195 million "Jack the Giant Slayer," which ended up in second place with only $10 million. After two weeks in theaters, the movie grossed only $66.4 million globally and is the biggest flop of 2013 so far.
The other wide release of the weekend was Colin Farell's "Dead Man Down" thriller, which ended up in fourth place with only $5.4 million. The new movie is also considered a flop and currently has a 38% fresh rating.
On the specialty side, Tommy Lee Jones' WWII drama "Emperor" was released in 260 theaters and grossed $1 million. That's a per-location average of $4,010. The film has a 35% fresh rating.

Saw Oz with the kiddies, it was pretty good. Too much on the CGI side. Like a cake with too much icing.
