Sam Mendes Rejects Offer to Direct Next "James Bond" Film

Sam Mendes Rejects Offer to Direct Next "James Bond" FilmSubmit Comment
It was recently reported that "Skyfall" director Sam Mendes would return for a new James Bond movie. But apparently he changed his mind, because he has now confirmed that he has turned down the offer to direct the next installment.

"It has been a very difficult decision not to accept [producers] Michael and Barbara's very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie," he explained. "Directing 'Skyfall' was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theater and other commitments, including productions of 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory' and 'King Lear,' that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond."

"Skyfall" was the first James Bond film to break the $1 billion mark, which is why it's not surprising that producers would want Sam Mendes back. "We thoroughly enjoyed working with Sam, he directed our most successful Bond movie ever, 'Skyfall,'" said the producers. "We would have loved to have made the next film with him but completely respect his decision to focus on other projects."

So in other words Sam Mendes was screaming "show me the money"

^^^Not this time. Mendes sad the offer was "very generous" but that he had other commitments, and in this case, given his relative class, he's probably speaking honestly.

As for the news, meh. Someone else will do it. Not like the James Bond franchise doesn't have lots of life left in it. Just replace Craig with someone people like.

And cue the Nolan rumors...

Christopher Nolan.

Please?

As long as he didn't leave huge plot holes, he'd make a pretty epic Bond flick I think.

We already have a Nolan Bond film. It's called Skyfall.

Next!

Ben Affleck. Go.

A classy response, still, turing down directing a James Bond movie for some theater and Charlie and Choc factory. How gay is that?
Rotten writes:

Ben Affleck! Good call.

Although, doesn't he only direct films he can star in too? I don't really want to see him IN the actual film.

In the one of his first english and famous words of Fernando Valenzuela, the wonder kid pitcher for the LA Dodgers said "More money." To hell with Mendes; get Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Scorsese or a list of others. Sick of some of these Hollywood types pulling this BS tactic.

Sam Mendes not directing? well, I think this is for the best. It will make Skyfall much more unique. Besides, they always have a choice to call Martin Campbell.

good. he's an overrated hack anyway and Skyfall sucked really bad
Champ1432 writes:

Kind of a bummer, was hoping Mendes would give it another go, really enjoyed Skyfall.

Hopefully they can get someone who will keep the ball rolling.

@rotten

Sir Benjamin Affleck directed Gone Baby Gone and he did not act in it, his brother did.

Luc Besson should direct the next Bond though.

Uwe Boll, with Jason Statham as Bond.

Here's my pick of Directors who would make an excellent Bond movie:

Kenneth Branagh
Matthew Vaughan (he's a huge Bond fan apparently)
Rupert Wyatt

Thank God. Skyfall was not ā James Bond movie for me. The guys got shot twice in the first ten minutes ! Some people say it's a reboot... but come on, Casino Royale was already a reboot !
