DreamWorks Making New Robin Hood Film "Merry Men"

DreamWorks Making New Robin Hood Film "Merry Men"Submit Comment
Back in 2010, Ridley Scott (Prometheus) directed "Robin Hood" that starred Russell Crowe as the title character. The Universal Pictures film grossed $321 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, and was a failure with the critics.

Now comes word that DreamWorks is working on its work Robin Hood movie, called "Merry Men," which will be directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) from a script by Brad Ingelsby, who wrote Liam Neeson's "Run All Night" and Christian Bale's "Out of the Furnace."

"Merry Men" is a re-imagining of the Robin Hood legend, focusing on Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and Will Scarlet. The film will have a revenge angle that's tonally reminiscent of "The Dirty Dozen" and "Ocean's Eleven."

BadChad- Well, at least it'll be impressive in some way. Scott's version was absolutely horrible, with the exception of the art direction at the end. The entire movie was awful. I'd take Kevin Costner's version of Scott's. Bleh. We need a 'Nolan equivalent' to come and reboot the tale right. Because there's no way a reboot will NOT happen to this series. Till the planet burneth, Robin Hood reboots are gonna happen.

Either make the damned movie RIGHT for a change, or don't make the damned movie at all, because Scott's version was the perfect sleep aid.

On the other hand, the description, title and direction for this sounds abysmal. It's not "Robin Hood", it's "Merry Men", focusing on the losers of the group, the same way a Jesus Christ movie would focus on Peter's homosexual infatuation with Paul and his foaming hatred of Mary.

Yeah. I don't think so, but nice try anyway.

The TV series Robin of Sherwood was the definitive version of the legend.

The Costner version was also pretty good, and one of his better roles imo.

Robin of Sherwood... is that the BBC version? I see it on Netflix but I can't believe that the BBC can do anything worthy of an 'Epic' description. Worthwhile at all?

And thinking of it, I can't remember Costner in any really memorable roles. The only Robin Hood that'll be the typecast is this guy-

"I can't remember Costner in any really memorable roles."

Uh, you never saw 3000 Miles to Graceland? Or Dragonfly? A Perfect World? Thirteen Days?

I'm not the biggest Costner fan, but he has certainly had a very solid and worthwhile career with many, many excellent performances.

@ Skywalker

Robin of Sherwood was ITV in the mid 80s. Michael Praed and the Jason Connery played Robin. Ray Winstone played Will Scarlett. Clannad did the title song.

As for Costner, he has done some great stuff. I saw him most recently in Hatfields & McCoys and he was brilliant in that. Open Range is another good film of his. He tends to be better in less mainstream stuff I think.

Okay, A Perfect World. It's been a long time, but I remember that being pretty good.

Costner was losing his style right when I was old enough to start appreciating what was good and what was crap. I just remember seeing him in The Untouchables, The Postman, and For the Love of the Game and felt that the guy just took roles where people worshiped him for standing there and looking pretty. Which is what most actors are doing these days anyways- but Costner felt like he was the tip of the iceberg of the pretty boy generation.

I'll check those others out and reevaluate him.

Is it going to be animated? If it is, it might be OK, if not - sounds gay.

Fixed. It sounds like a terrible idea for a movie. Maybe they can make more movies without the main character (reason for the film to be made) in them.

@mink

you forgot 'mr.brooks' - probably his best performance.

So a Robin Hood movie that's not about Robin Hood. Awesome. I can't wait for that movie about Batgirl, Robin, and Kato.
