"The Hobbit: There and Back Again" Delayed by Five Months

The Hobbit: There and Back Again Delayed by Five MonthsSubmit Comment
Now that Warner Bros already released "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in December and went on to gross almost $1 billion, it's now time to look forward to the sequel, called "The Desolation of Smaug," which is set to hit theaters on December 13th.

Now comes word that the studio decided to move the third installment, called "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," from its July 18th, 2014 release to December 17th, 2014. The move is likely to maintain consistency and have all "The Hobbit" movies be released in December. It's also likely that Warners doesn't want to go up against all the summer blockbusters, like "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

In related news, "Kick-Ass 2" has been moved from its July 28th release date to August 16th. And "2 Guns," starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, has been moved up by two weeks to an August 16th release.

Makes sense. It would get destroyed at the summer box-office. These films make much more money at Christmas time when its competition is weaker.

Christmas time competition hasn't been weak since forever, I dont know where people get this misconception.

Christmas is a time when a bunch of family movies and oscarbait fill up the theaters, it's probably the most competitive time of the year.

Besides who wants to waste 4 hours on a movie during the middle of summer? Not me, I'd be chasing too much as at the park.

@Spooky. There are more big scifi/action/fantasy flicks during the summer. Every weekend a new genre film opens. THE HOBBIT absorbs all the audience for fantasy/scifi at Christmas because it's essentially the only one in the marketplace. It would earn less in the summer.

Does this mean Kick-Ass 2 is going to be bad? I have high hopes for it. But "Apes" remake was an August release and was excellent. Hmm ... genius move?

I'm really glad I won't have to pay for both Days of Future past and this. I'm broke as it is.

"Christmas is a time when a bunch of family movies and oscarbait fill up the theaters, it's probably the most competitive time of the year."

Which is why, in general, one movie almost always dominates throughout the entire Holiday season, right?

Very competitive indeed, unless of course you're the sole big dog sitting on the porch.

They can move the final installment to any time of year they want and itll still dominate
Everyone knows this
Theyre stretchin the material and the promotion for all its worth

I would also assume that the folk that flock to these movies have a disposable income that they wont spend on girlfriends and as far as family gifts go, Im sure theyll be happy with a freshly mowed lawn and/or moving out

What @cress said

They'd rip it a new one during summer season (Night at the museum 2, Prince Caspian). It's a winter movie.

And they'd better fix the mistakes made on the first one.
