Christian Bale and Tom Hardy in Talks for Competing "Everest" Movies

Christian Bale and Tom Hardy in Talks for Competing "Everest" MoviesSubmit Comment
Christian Bale is in talks to star in "Everest," a true-life adventure movie being developed by Universal Pictures. The $20 million film will be directed by Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns, Contraband) and will begin shooting in Iceland during the summer.

"Everest" is based on the 1996 disastrous expedition to scale Mount Everest. Three different expeditions were hit by a sudden blinding storm and by the time it was all over, eight climbers died. The tale was first made famous by Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air," his first-person account of being among the lucky ones to make it back down the mountain. This film will be sourced from various books and interviews with survivors.

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures is developing its own "Everest" movie, which has Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) attached to direct. That film has Bale's "The Dark Knight Rises" co-star Tom Hardy attached to play Sir George Mallory in his quest to be the first to the top of Everest in the 1920s.

Bales good at being tortured
Give Hardy a 'Forrest' spinoff from Lawless

I think the second one with Hardy will be more enjoyable as it ends in triumph, whereas Bale's film ends in obvious disaster.

Anyone here seen The Machinist with Bale? I caught a glimpse of it on TV the other night. I didn't see enough to make a judgement on it.

What's up with these competing films? This, Snow White, friends with benefits...

@dirt: That's one film I HAVE seen, and...it's NOT a film you want to see to be entertained.

It's more of a psychological experience, like maybe a more visceral David Lynch type flick.

Definitely parsecs away from any mainstream film Bale has done. Surreal, ethereal, nightmarish are words that come to mind.

But then I haven't seen the movie in YEARS, so I could be totally off base with my fading recollection.

A Forrest spin off would be dope!

Sounds good, I will add that to the list. Can it be compared to movies like Donnie Darko or Memento maybe? Thanks man.

Harsh Times! I've got it, haven't watched it yet. I've been meaning to watch it for a while.

machinist and memento are somewhat similar
minkowski writes:

The Machinist is certainly NOTHING like Donnie Darko, and very very very little like Memento.

You're going to be very disappointed if you go in looking for another film like those two.

More like Fight Club in the sense that Bale's character doesn't sleep, so his reality becomes a blur of objective reality and subjective dreams. That and Bale lost 60 punds for the role and looks like a Jewish zombie from a Shindler's List cut scene.

Bando, Harsh Times was f*cking terrible. Cmon man...really?!?!

Neither of these films will be as good as Vertical Limit or Cliffhanger :-)

I loved Fight Club!

I'm just gonna have to watch it to find out.

Hardy and Bale should make more films together, I think they'd be a great double act either against each other (like they did in Batman)or working together e.g. if they were the villains in a Bond film. I get the feeling they could play off each other really well.

Hardy is a tremendous actor. I urge everyone to watch Bronson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKC-FKGMeCY and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronson_(film)
