JJ Abrams Working on "Half-Life" and "Portal" Video Game Movies

JJ Abrams Working on "Half-Life" and "Portal" Video Game MoviesSubmit Comment
During the DICE Summit today, Valve's managing director Gabe Newell joined director JJ Abrams (Star Wars: Episode VII, Star Trek) on stage, hinting that the duo are working to gether to bring Valve's "Half-Life" and "Portal" video games to the big screen.

"There's an idea we have for a game that we'd like to work with Valve on," said Abrams. Newell responded: "We're super excited about making movies, either a 'Portal' movie or a 'Half-Life' movie. We reached the point that we decided to do more than talk."

"Half-Life" was originally released in 1998 and follows a physicist who opens a dimensional rift between a New Mexico research facility and a world of monsters. "Portal" is a "Hal-Life" spin-off that was released in 2007. It revolves around a test subject named Chell who is forced to navigate a rival research company's laboratories armed with a device that can open portals through space.

Update: Abrams spoke a bit more on the topic after the presentation, stating: "It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets, which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas."

Half-Life had the best story ever for a video game and defiantly the best game (along with max payne)ever released for PC.

Half Life 2 = my favorite video game... EVER! However, Valve talking to Hollywood in the past on this subject matter has been short... "NO!" At least now there may be some hope.

Dude, you made my day. But HL2, being probably the best game ever, it would be better left alone as the game it is.

Portal could make for an excellent hard sci-fi film. Doesnt even need to be big budget. Just Chell and GlaDOS. Mind games. Bent space. Awesome. I'm thinking get the moon guy to make it.

So JJ makes a terriable Star Trek ref*ck, and is now in control of all major sci fi films. Wonderful. Couldnt make a good movie with one thing on his mind, oh but now they give him multiple things on his plate. Yeah im sure he'll make a good movie now that he really cant focus.

I take this as good news, but I'm nervous too. Abrams has a lot on his plate now. Like we discussed in the other threads, odds are he won't direct these films, rather just produce and oversee story. But that's still a damn sight better than anything Uwe Boll would've given us...
