Frank Darabont Explains Why He Joined "Godzilla" Reboot

Frank Darabont Explains Why He Joined "Godzilla" RebootSubmit Comment
Earlier this month it was reported that Frank Darabont, the director of "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile," has signed on to re-write the script for the upcoming "Godzilla" movie, which hits theaters on May 16th, 2014.

In a new interview, Darabont explained what he hopes to add to the franchise. "What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki," he explained. "And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the sh*t out of your city, that was Godzilla."

Darabont continued: "What we're trying to do with the new movie is not have it be campy. We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It's not that cliched, thinly disguised romance. It's different, it's a different set of circumstances than you're used to seeing."

This'll fail no matter who's directing, starring, writing etc.

It's Frank Darabont people. He's written three awesome scripts that went into three very good movies, and he wrote a terrific screenplay for a movie that was never made (Fahrenheit 451).

I say Frank has more than earned a little leeway.

@Mink 100% sir. Frank's track record is spot on at this point. And the work he did with Walking Dead gives me peace of mind that he can take on even Godzilla
minkowski writes:

@Bunny: Yep. I think people appreciate Frank's immense capabilities, but given the history of the creature as a staple of Japanese...Z movies, and the eternally lingering toxicity of Emmerich's 1998 bomb, they're overwhelmed with a tsunami of cynicism.

Darabont never disappoints.
