"GI Joe 2" Producer Says Re-Shoots Had Nothing To Do With Channing Tatum

"GI Joe 2" Producer Says Re-Shoots Had Nothing To Do With Channing TatumSubmit Comment
Last May, Paramount Pictures announced that it will move "GI Joe 2: Retaliation" from its June 29th, 2012 release to March 29th, 2013, despite the fact that the studio already spent millions on marketing the film.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Soon after, the studio said that it needed the extra nine months to convert the film to 3D. But Deadline heard that it's more than that. Apparently audiences weren't happy with seeing Channing Tatum get so little screen-time and then get killed in the sequel. As a result, Paramount planned to re-shoot parts of the movie to give Tatum more scenes in the film.

But in a new interview, producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura revealed that the re-shoots took only three days and that the film is not that different from the original version. "Channing [returned to shoot] for four hours, five hours? So it wasn't really about [giving him more screen-time] at all," he added.

No, that means they now show him alive at the end! ready for part 3. Seeing him get killed off in that early trailer was the thing that actually got my interest!

@AYT BALL: Is it me or have you been gone for a while? Welcome back man. As usual you're spot on about this sequel. The promise of Tatum dying was by far the best thing this film had going for it. Lets just hope the extra footage was used to stretch out his death scene.

I could go for a five hour Tatum death scene

@ SACdaddy - haha yeah, been a while, just dipping my toe back in. Got annoyed with all the bitching to be honest.

As far as tatum goes, i actually dont mind the guy, but thought it was a nice ballsy move for a film like this to kill off the main characters and start over.

I'll bet Lohan had something to do with this.

Ah. So the movie just sucked up front, then.

"As far as tatum goes, i actually dont mind the guy, but thought it was a nice ballsy move for a film like this to kill off the main characters and start over."

Ballsy? The original cartoon movie killed off Duke too, but Sunbow and Hasbro rescinded only when Prime's movie death shocked and saddened children and pissed off parents. Then there's the fact hundreds of movie sequels don't have the budget to bring back the original B to A list stars so they rely on cheaper actors.

Not exactly ballsy or original, imo.

@mink

That animated G.I. Joe movie was awesome. Just the opening is better tgan these new sh*t movies. I still haven't finished the first one!

@ Mink, didnt say it was original, and i did say it was ballsy for a movie like this!

Something that they would love to make a franchise out of and sell a million figures to a whole new generation, then yeah, its a ballsy thing to kill off a character that, like you said, could piss of kids and parents.

If the reason is the budget then the sequel probably wouldnt be getting made at all, from what i remember it seemed to do ok money wise, even though it was pretty sh*t.
minkowski writes:

^^I don' think it's ballsy because that wasn't their intention. When you do something ballsy, you do it *because* it's ballsy. Intent is everything. Like when Arnold came out of the front door in True Lies. Stupid, but ballsy.

Here, they just "killed off" the old cast, and I'm assuming that means we won't even see the original crew killed, just implied, because they couldn't afford them.

That's not ballsy. That's practical, or cheap. Or greedy. But not ballsy.
AYT BALL writes:

If thats the case, at some point they decided to go ahead with the sequel knowing they would have to kill everyone off. Still ballsy imo, guess we can agree to disagree....still couldnt give a sh*t about seeing it!

"at some point they decided to go ahead with the sequel knowing they would have to kill everyone off"

Yep. Not like it would have been the first time the sacrificed the original cast in favor if a sh*tty, cheap sequel.

And let's face it, some of those trailer scenes look like about as bad as the VFX from Mortal Kombat.
