Steven Spielberg Abandons "Robopocalypse" Sci-Fi Film

Steven Spielberg Abandons "Robopocalypse" Sci-Fi FilmSubmit Comment
It was recently reported that Steven Spielberg will next direct a sci-fi film, called "Robopocalypse," that has Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) attached to star. The plan was to go into production this month for an April 25th, 2014 release date.

But now comes word that Spielberg decided to postpone the project indefinitely. A spokesman for the director said the film was "too important and the script is not ready, and it's too expensive to produce. It's back to the drawing board to see what is possible."

Some in the industry believe that Spielberg was ready to abandon "Robopocalypse" after his October interview on "60 Minutes," during which he said that he could direct an action film "in my sleep at this point in my career. It doesn't attract me anymore."

Based on the Daniel H. Wilson novel, "Robopocalypse" is about the human race's attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising. The script is written by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield) and is based on a novel by Daniel H. Wilson.

Beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spielberg has always been one to save every penny and craft a blockbuster as economically as possible, relative to the nature of the film. I admire him for that. If heís postponing to keep the budget down, good. Also, I agree with his self analysis about doing action films in his sleep.

Still, this is a bummer. This is one of the very few films Iíve been looking forward to over the next two years.

Alex this is getting tiring already. It's almost like you want this site to be a joke.

Or maybe you just think you can read between the lines, well maybe you can, maybe you can't. Either way, you could be wrong. So maybe it would be best to just title the article as to what is written.

Anyway, to hell with this dopey movie. I'm kind of glad this sh*t isn't seeing light anytime soon.

"Robopocalypse is about the human race's attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising"

Yeah. I think we have this kind of movie. It's called The Terminator

You mean Salvation.

The Terminator was two people trying to survive a f*ckin' robotic Austrian.

Shelved indefinitely. Hmmmm.

The script isn't ready. Translation: the hired writer can't make it work.

Too important: because robot rebellions are a concern to most people, to anyone sane, right?

To expensive to produce: Can't get the 200 million that went to Michael Bay's smash-em crash-em rock-em sock-em robot trilogy, right? Sounds like the studios don't have much faith, which I'm sure disturbs someone somewhere in a galaxy far, far away.

Anyway. Shelving a project till the time is right is NOT equivalent to abandoning it. Stop making up sh*t Alex.

This guy needs to f*ckin retire. Most of his films are so0o0o0o0o sh*t!

f*ck Spielberg!
minkowski writes:

@Ricksteddy: I think he was trying to say he's now too damned good for action.

Not really sure what he means. Jaws, maybe, but does he consider Minority Report "action", and if so, why hasn't he made a film as enjoyable as MR in the last, oh I dunno, decade?

And why isn't Tin Tin action? And if he's so "on his game" as he seems to think, why does Lincoln suck ass whereas his more doc*mentary, historical films, like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, do not?

Spielberg is officially full of sh*t.
Rocksteddy writes:

I honestly think Speilberg needs to retire and get put in a home.
Senile directors often mistake their "egos", if you will. Working as a sci-fi director, then moving to adventure, then war pictures, then dialogue-based films, then "action" films, thinking their so advanced in what they're doing they move on to projects that aren't their cup of tea.

Steven Spielberg was NOT the one to direct Lincoln, as you can see. They could have gotten Werner Herzog, David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, hell, they could have even gotten Nicolas Winding Refn!
minkowski writes:
on January 10th, 2013 at 6:09:08 PM

^^My vote, from your list, goes to Werner Herzog. Lynch and Aronofsky would make Lincoln's life one huge incoherent mindf*ck. Refn probably wouldn't have the experience to handle the story scope.
