Kevin Smith and Mel Gibson Almost Directed "Good Will Hunting"Posted: January 5th, 2013 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
  In a lengthy interview with Boston Magazine, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon recalled how difficult it was to get "Good Will Hunting" into production, especially with two actors who weren't well known at the time.
Damon explained that he always envisioned Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro as the professor and the psychiatrist while writing the script, which was about a genius kid being chased by the government.
While studios fell in love with the story, as time went by, everyone lost interest, which forced Damon and Affleck to find a director. At one point, Affleck suggested directing it himself, something that was received with a polite silence. "It was the beginning of my own directorial ambition," he said.
Eventually, Affleck took the script to his "Chasing Amy" director Kevin Smith, who read it and said: "I wouldn't dare direct this movie, this is so beautiful." Instead, he took it to Harvey Weinstein, who attached Mel Gibson (Braveheart) to direct. But Gibson took several months developing it, at which point, they went to Gus Van Sant, who worked with Affleck's brother Casey on "To Die For."
Harvey eventually decided to move forward with the movie when Damon was cast in John Grisham's "The Rainmaker," directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who handed the "Good Will Hunting" script to his "Jack" star Robin Williams. Everything was now in place, and resulted in Oscar wins and massive careers for Affleck and Damon.

A "police silence"?
What, is that after the 21 gun salute, or before?

I appreciate articles like this which offers an interesting background story to an amazing flawless film - one of my favs. This essentially launched the careers of two of Hollywood's now heavy and sought after actor and director. The Oscars recognized the freshness of these two “wonder-kids” by awarding them with Best Screenplay. Kevin Smith demonstrating good sense here in choosing not to direct it - know your limitations is about right Ozzie. I'm glad that Freeman and Deniro were not involved. As the casting of Skarsgard (not as well known at the time) and Williams struck a better balance. Also yielded Williams first Oscar win in the Best Supporting Actor category which was about damn well time the Academies honored the man (whose prior Oscar worthy work included Awakenings, Dead Poets Society and Good Morning Vietnam). Williams played the psychiatrist role here with quiet restraint, sensitivity and compassion.
How do you like them apples? Now, I gotta go see about a girl.
(sorry I couldn't resist)

@nzfilmmaker – thanks bud
@Ranger – LOL
The full read on Boston Magazine link is worthwhile. Here Damon and Affleck express their love for Boston, their Mothers and persistence in developing this screenplay as a vehicle to catapult their own stardom (like Stallone did with Rocky). They also showed how much Studios jerked them around with countless rewrites so much so the screenwriters started incorporating blowjobs into the script between Sean and Will - thankfully deleted by Weinstein when he got his hands on this project and steered it back on production course. Great to hear that Damon / Affleck will reunite as actor / director to tell the story about Boston's Whitey Bulger - an organized crimelord who locals revered with Robin Hood sentiments. Even as mega-stars these two always express a desire to want to return to their roots and show us the backyards they played in. Now that they are living high on the hog they can afford talk at lengths over this creative gem as their rise to meteoric fame and fortune is well deserved.

And yet part of the reason Good Will Hunting won the awards it won was for the championing of Howard Zinn's take on American history, which was awkwardly shoehorned into the screenplay.
Funny how people always miss the obvious things.
