TorrentFreak released a list of the most pirated TV shows of 2012, showing that "Game of Thrones" was illegally downloaded over four million times, which is almost the same amount of US people who actually watched the show on television.

The second most pirated show on the list is Showtime's "Dexter" with 3.85 million downloads, which is a lot more than its legal US audience of 2.75 million. While shows like "The Big Bang Theory," "How I Met Your Mother," "The Walking Dead," "House" and "Revolution" also made the list, the downloads were only a fraction of the total legal viewership.

TorrentFreak estimates that more than 80% of all illegal TV downloads occur outside the United States, mostly because the shows air in foreign countries several weeks after the initial US debut. For example, more than 10% of all illegal downloads of "Game of Thrones" took place in Australia, where the show airs one week after the US premiere.

5. Breaking Bad: 2,580,000 downloads - 2,980,000 US viewers

6. The Walking Dead: 2,550,000 downloads - 10,870,000 US viewers

7. Homeland: 2,400,000 downloads - 2,360,000 US viewers

8. House: 2,340,000 downloads - 9,780,000 US viewers

9. Fringe: 2,280,000 downloads - 3,120,000 US viewers

10. Revolution: 2,130,000 downloads - US viewers

Game of Thrones & Dexter lie in the bottom three of legal views. The illegal downloads are pretty constant. Piracy rates in these stats are redundant, if not encouraging to the show.

Depends on how you look at the numbers. Either as an absolute number or a ration to downloads. The ratio is probably the right number, but I'm too lazy to do the math, and besides, there's no legal viewer number for Revolution.

Anyway, nothing much has changed. Game of Thrones was the highest pirated game of 2011 too.
