James Cameron May Own "Terminator" Franchise in 2019

James Cameron May Own "Terminator" Franchise in 2019Submit Comment
About 18 months ago, Megan Ellison, the daughter of billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison, bought the rights to the "Terminator" franchise for $20 million, with plans of developing three films.

While Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Justin Lin (Fast Five) were in talks to join "Terminator 5," there has been zero progress. As a result Lin dropped out. The reason for the delay is that the franchise is running out of time. New copyright laws state that "Terminator" rights will revert back to James Cameron in 2019, giving Megan only enough time to make two films.

To get things moving, Megan has now brought on her brother David to help produce and fund "Terminator 5." Megan is known for such films as "The Master," "True Grit" and "Zero Dark Thirty," while David has been behind "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," "World War Z" and "Star Trek Into Darkness."

The siblings are now searching for a writer.

Hopefully they get this sorted with future wars.

Eh...who gives a sh*t about franchise. To me it's already ruined since Terminator 3.
Morbius writes:

Only enough time to make 2 films. In 7 years?
We saw 7 Saw films in that amount of time, and we're gonna see 10 + Star Wars films.

Get OUT of the kitchen and into the studio.

On second thoughts...

Then Cameron can sell it to Disney.
Avirex writes:

Didn't Cameron originally sell the rights anyway? (Or did he simply give it away like an unwanted pregnancy?) He's just going to do the same thing again in 2019.

Hey that might be good...a remake of terminator 3 directed by james cameron would obviously turn out better but then again the terminators would look like blue avatar versions of arnold set on pandora...i still picture in my head how T2 would've been if arnold was the T-1000 or even if there wasn't an advanced terminator, just to see him playing the bad guy is what scared me as a kid and made the first movie so much different than T2...would've made T2 more scarier, well and funnier...fahck you ahssshole lol

A. Cameron has already said he's more than totally done with the franchise. If by some miracle they don't squeeze out another film by 2019, he'll just send the rights to someone else for another twenty million or so.

B. Nowhere does it say, nor does it read in the above article, the production company must make three films, or two, by 2019, and the usually expectancy is for one film to hit production. With another...seven years to go, I don't think that's a big deal.

Just reboot the franchise already for Christ's sake. It's the right thing at this point. A sequel is going to suck, they've f*cked the timeline all to hell, just reboot the damned thing and try to get it half right.

That's all.
Rambo writes:

A reboot might work but only with proper casting.no collin farrell and no jaden smith thank you very much.
sedibus writes:

they should have just let this story apart, or why not introduce a different concept or perspective to the same universe.
sedibus writes:
on December 4th, 2012 at 3:18:53 PM

or, anyway, who gives a sh*t, they should develop a different concept completely away from that of the terminator franchise so they wont be have to pay for it

and then you could probably have something original and stuff like that.

you know, ala Elysium and Oblivion, you know.

i will happily write terminator 5, plot: the machines develop a terminator that absorbs matter to make copies of itself and send thousands of new terminator machines back through time to start killing off the entire human race before john connor is even born and begin to merge realities when the skynet mainframe sends itself through time to embed its neural net into the undeveloped global networks of 1984. The only hope for humanity is future john connor's ability to reach out to the T-101 model holding the key to skynets ultimate weakness
Rambo writes:
