President Obama Responsible for "Star Wars" Sale?

President Obama Responsible for "Star Wars" Sale?Submit Comment
Taxes play a huge part in everyday decisions of citizens and businesses. LeBron James may have ended up playing for the New York Knicks if the state didn't have some of the highest state and city taxes in the country (versus Florida, which has no state taxes). It's also possible that George Lucas wouldn't have sold "Star Wars" to Disney if there wasn't the scare that President Obama will raise taxes in 2013.

We know that Lucas has been talking to Disney about selling Lucasfilm for years. And it's not a coincidence that he made sure the sale took place before 2013. The Capital Gains Tax, which is a tax on profits from investments, is currently at 15%. But Obama wants to raise it to all new levels, at least 20%. That means that Lucas had a decision to make. Does he want to pay 15% in taxes in 2012 on his $4.05 billion sale, or 20% in 2013? The choice was easy.

While Lucas never publicly stated that tax policies had anything to do with the timing of the sale, there is speculation that it was a large factor. In fact, there are countless other sales being planed before the end of the year.

I assume Lucas intends to give the 15% to charities instead and use his money to help poor people suffering in his own country and in other countries around the world. Cause who needs 4.05 billion dollars anyway right?

So. What's strange about hating people who refuse to speak proper English, wear clothes that would make a clown blush, name their kids after fruit from Alice's Wonderland, drive cars that go with the clothes, and sell drugs like little girls used to sell lemonade, which is actually mostly illegal in many, if not all, places, unless you have a business license.

That's not even including the tired, monotonous obsession with slavery and civil rights, the kneejerk jungle violence, or the Hating Whitey mentality that crowds out whatever slim thought they have in a day.

As for the news, probably. It's not a stretch. A lot of businesses are reacting negatively to the news Obama was re-elected. Some have stopped hiring, some have pushed to quickly close business deals ahead of both tax increases and Obamacare.

lol. It's going to be fun to watch people cry when this country implodes economically, and from a Democrat standpoint, it's desirable.

Just think. You can hook everyone on the government, perhaps permanently, like FDR did, and blame the Republicans for the mess. So not only have you consolidated electoral power, you've eliminated your political rival.

Pretty awesome. If you're Machiavellian.

Just wait. Wait. Wait till the taxes go up, wait till Obamacare raises unemployment, just like minimum wage and mandatory benefits did (e.g., entitlement), wait till the economy starts receding again.

I'm just waiting for angry white males to start rioting. You ain't seen sh*t yet.

*sigh*

You really have no clue, right?

Obama's plans to raise taxes has been in the wind for years and the only thing keeping him from doing so is the Republicans, who argue that doing so hurts job growth and is socialistic in nature, and before you argue otherwise, fact is, before 1913, the American Constitution simply stipulated the government had the right to raise taxes for defense of the nations, and not much else, but Woodrow Wilson and the Progressives of that age thought otherwise.

Read your damned history man.

AMENDMENT XVI

Passed by Congress July 2, 1909. Ratified February 3, 1913.

Note: Article I, section 9, of the Constitution was modified by amendment 16.

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

I'm not rich, Stapes, far from it, but I can say this: they aren't better than me.

For a fact I can say, the only thing I can tell that makes most of them any different from, say, a guy flipping hamburgers, is their money, which yes, they worked for it, but how is a greedy pursuit of wealth "superiority"?

Fact is, from what I can tell, most people who are very successful, monetary-wise, are actually sociopaths, and in fact, a number of studies have thrown light on the possibility very successful people are in the position of power and wealth not because they're smarter, or "better", but because they have a drive to shamelessly exploit other people to get ahead, in a system that greatly rewards them for doing so.

That's not superiority to me, buddy.

"Everything that the rich is doing now"

Are. We can see why you're not wealthy. You can't even master singular versus possessive grammatical use.

"they've been doing for years anyway."

They've "been doing it" since the dawn of man. Hell, even squirrels live or die based on how well they store nuts. You think people are any different?

Human nature, hemorrhoid.

And how the hell do you expect people to come up with the goodies you so greatly enjoy? You think the guy who invented the automobile, the television, the modern day computer, would have done so if he thought he'd make nothing, that he'd end up eating from can and kicking the sh*t from his boots?

People like you know nothing about how humans actually work. You just conjure up some idealistic image and demand everyone else conform to it, because that's how you think civilization progresses, even if you have to kill them to make it happen.

"Ayn Rand is a f*cking idiot"

Rand was a lot of things. Crazy. Hypocrite. Idiot wasn't one of them.

"for instituting a philosophy"

She didn't institute sh*t. She wrote books. That's it.

Why is it people like you think when a person writes something you don't like, they're sending you to the Gulag, but when a leftist actually reduces your intellectual freedom, like on most American school campuses, you champion it like you just won a free trip to the f*cking zoo?

"that babies are born with and the excuse of class warfare is bullsh*t."

Translation: Durrrrr. Sling some incoherent inane sh*t ans see if anyone notices.

"If anything, the class warfare is aimed at the workers."

Yes, because the hatred of people financially worse off than themselves is definitely a motivator among the rich, right?
minkowski writes:

Well, trolls? Are you going to come back with something substantive instead of standing there shellacking your clits with lemon pepper barbecue sauce?
Stapes writes:
on November 30th, 2012 at 1:59:19 PM

I'm not rich either, Mink. But like everyone else in the U.S. under the freedoms supposedly protected under the constitution and the idea of limited government protecting the "movers and shakers," of human society, I would like to eventually become rich (and by rich I mean realize the goals of success I have for myself). Government depedence and government instituted morality don't do anything but take us backwards as a species and in fact make us complicent slaves to the rules of big government based on the completely unrealistic idea that we are all equal, we are in fact not all equal. Marx said that between production, idea and distribution there is no one factor more valuable than the other, what he failed to realize is that man is inherently selfish and that not everyone who can labor can also manage or create. We are not all equal and the cream will always rise to the top. Of course there are sociopaths and evil rich people, however, that number is a small one and does not accurately reflect the fact that the best of humanity creates and is entirely responsible for the progression of humanity, not the f*cking prole or masses who are easily influenced by the naysayers who seek only to engaged in class warfare to their own benefit or under the misguided idea that all things should and are equal in this world. So I say f*ck these miniscule morons who rally behind someone like Obama, blaming anything and everything for their problems on the fact that they weren't born into money. They never will or would have contributed anything to society in the first place. Milton Friedman put it best when he PROVED beyond a shadow of a doubt that capitalism does the most good for the most number of people.

As for wealth, I don't give a sh*t. Never have. Money means nothing to me, other than providing food and shelter, electricity and some spending cash for entertainment.

I don't care about managing the masses, I don't care to create sh*t others can consume.

Power acc*mulates. It's like matter and gravity.

Pile up some matter and you get gravity. Gravity attracts more matter. The gravity grows.

Eventually the matter grows so large the gravity begins to implode the matter itself and you end up with a black hole.

That's what's happened with out economy, with power hungry liberals in charge. A black hole.

Yeah, but their work literally lives long after they're gone.

I can see the logic though. After Neeson made "Taken" he said in an interview: When they asked me to do it i thought - why not? A couple in months in France with my wife working on a movie no one will ever care about and I'll get paid. I never thought this movie will be shipped to theatres, I thought it will go STV in Europe and Walmart bins and that will be it.

So, maybe when you're De Niro or Neeson you know that your legacy will live on in the images of "Taxi Driver" and "Schindler's List", not "Freelancers" or "After.Life". So they don't give a f*ck.

1.The Dark Knight Rises - I know that there are many haters out there but I really liked how it connected to 'Batman Begins' and focused much more on Bruce Wayne/Batman - that was one of the reasons I didn't like 'The Dark Knight'...too much focus on the joker and harvey dent not to mention the movie was boring as f*ck with all the crime/police drama mumbo jumbo.

2.Battleship - another much hated movie.brainless fun to me in the cinema, great action from start to finish, human vs aliens, great camera work and soundtrack unlike the tv show look alike 'avengers' which was forgettable.

Sigh, Mink reading what he chooses to read once again. My point was that he chose to sell Lucasfilm well before anyone knew whether or not Obama would be reelected. The argument was that, Lucas didn't say, "Oh sh*t, Obama might be reelected, I better sell my multi-billion dollar company just in case." It was not to argue the merits of raising taxes on the rich. Did you see anything mentioned in my initial comment that said ANYTHING along the lines of:

"You're wrong, Alex! Obama isn't raising taxes!"

"So what? Raising taxes on the rich is fair!"

"Go Obama, he got us more Star Wars film!"

Did I bring up any US history like you chose to just so people can see how brilliant you think you are? No, I did not.

And don't waste your time with, "No, but you believe it because you voted for Obama" comment because I'm not here to talk about my politics, no one should be because this is a movie news website. By talking about it here, you're just further proving that no one will listen to you talk about politics outside of a place where you can just write it down for people to read.

I honestly do not understand what your problem is, but I'll admit that it is pretty damn interesting to see you pull something completely out of nothing.

"Well, trolls? Are you going to come back with something substantive instead of standing there shellacking your clits with lemon pepper barbecue sauce?"

Yes, because that is a substantive, well thought out statement. Congrats, man. You're the smartest guy on the internet message boards. I have to believe that if you had any outlet for the borderline psychotic crap that comes out of your mouth in the real world, that you wouldn't be posting here all the time.
minkowski writes:

^^^Blah blah blah.

Get over it. Everybody and their grandmother knew Obama was going to be re-elected. Even I said he would, months ago, on here.

Did you not follow the brilliant and frighteningly prescient work of stat poll master Nate Silver? Guy's like a modern day Harry Seldon.

Regardless, it was also guaranteed taxes would go up, whether or not Obama got re-elected, from what I understand, unless, and ONLY unless, both the House and the Senate went to the Republicans, along with the presidency, and that's what it would have taken, what it will take to keep Bush's tax cuts active.

And no one, not even the most optimistic Republicans, like Karl the Snarl Rove, claimed such a scenario would become reality.

So: Do you follow politics, news, or do you just gab for the f*ck of it?

I have movies I like, to varying degrees, and movies I do not, all on a spectrum, a continuum.

Right. This coming from a guy, you, who posts nonsense, and then, when someone takes his nonsense at face value, swears he didn't say what he clearly did say.

Next you'll be arguing that what you REALLY meant was that Lucas expected Romney to win and he sold Lucasfilm because Bane Capital ordered him to do so, or something else equally outrageous, like you did in the Star Wars thread.
minkowski writes:

"Think I already did that by showing that my initial comment had nothing to do with anything that you initially attacked it for."

Actually you just said "that's not what I said!" and then proceeded to hurl some lame insults, comments about me, but nothing that explained or illuminiated your position.

Here's what you said, and please, correct me if I'm quoting you poorly:

"Except the sale was announced on October 30th and was in progress MONTHS before that. Lucas didn't pick up the phone on October 25th and call Disney to ask if they wanted to buy Lucasfilm."

Translation: Lucas couldn't know Obama would win.

Strawman, as I have said. Why? Because Obama announced he was going to raise taxes if he won, and because virtually ever poll had Obama winning.

Almost every single one, save some poll done at a university in Colorado. Even Nate Silver called it for Obama, and he even predicted the Congressional wins. Perfectly.

What, you think Lucas operates in vacuum, no space pun intended? That he doesn't keep abreast of all things political?

Never mind the thing I mentioned with the looming fiscal crisis, something that's fairly independent of Obama anyway, that would in all likelihood trigger IMMEDIATE and MANDATORY tax increases.

Regardless, you made it out like it was all about predicting one impossible to predict event, and as I said, that's a straw man because your premise is downright FALSE.

The point is, sure, Lucas couldn't know, with absolute certainty, but he could guess. Did he? Did Obama have anything to do with it? *shrug* Who knows? But to dismiss it out of hand simply because you assume he's not Nostradamus is just absurd and pointless and a waste of a thinking person's time.

Have a nice day.

You yourself said that tax hikes were coming regardless of who won, which means that it's idiotic to claim that Obama had anything to do with the sale of Star Wars.

Therefore, my original comment, which only posited that Lucas would never sell his life's work based on who might become president and that the idea of this story was ridiculous on those merits alone was, in fact, not in contrast to any thought yourself had on the idea that Lucas would sell Lucasfilm become of Obama's policies. You chose to pick my comment apart because you don't like the things I say and because you know I voted for Obama (which is irrelevant to anything on a movie news site) which is just a sad, sad waste of your time.

It's not enough that I think that the story is ridiculous, if it's not ridiculous for YOUR reasons, then the comment deserves to be taken severely out of context.

"waste of a thinking person's time"

Would you really know anything at all about that?
minkowski writes:

"You yourself said that tax hikes were coming regardless of who won, which means that it's idiotic to claim that Obama had anything to do with the sale of Star Wars."

Yes, I said that, but does Lucas understand that? Does he know enough about the fiscal cliff and the end of the Bush tax cuts, or does he simply agree with the mainstream position, the mainstream belief Obama would raise corporate and capital gains taxes as a means of redistributing wealth?

Many commentators said just the same thing, so it's hard to say at what level Lucas was operating with respect to his understanding of what an Obama second term would, will mean, and just because he's aware of the situation doesn't mean he understands, understood, it better than six thousand professional commentators on both sides of the political aisle.

Durrrrr.

"Therefore, my original comment, which only posited that Lucas would never sell his life's work based on who might become president and that the idea of this story was ridiculous on those merits alone was, in fact, not in contrast to any thought yourself had on the idea that Lucas would sell Lucasfilm become of Obama's policies."

In other words, you're original statement that claimed Lucas couldn't predict the election in fact meant the election just didn't matter at all, right?

Is that you were saying, because I read something entirely different from your words, words that said, in effect, Lucas couldn't predict the future, and now you're saying that future didn't matter, but only after you think I old you so, right?

Which of us is a liar? It's not me, that's for sure.

"You chose to pick my comment apart because you don't like the things I say and because you know I voted for Obama (which is irrelevant to anything on a movie news site) which is just a sad, sad waste of your time."

I chose to "pick your comment apart" because you said Lucas didn't sell Star Wars because he couldn't predict the future, when in fact the future was already predicted quite clearly by Nate Silver and a thousand other respectable pollsters.

"It's not enough that I think that the story is ridiculous, if it's not ridiculous for YOUR reasons, then the comment deserves to be taken severely out of context."

Try to make more sense with the words you can handle, dude, and stop trying to match me to redeem your weakened ego, okay, but this paragraph, and the one above, sound like a desperate attempt for the little dog to bark as loud as the big dog, i.e., neither makes much sense.

Finally, let's not forget something. I'm not saying Lucas sold Star Wars because of Obama, I'm simply saying your, Velocity's, claim that it's not a possible scenario because Lucas couldn't predict the future is just downright stupid and false.

And I'm not opposed to dumping all the bad, deserved or not, I can on the f*cker in the White House, either.

Yeah, the funny thing about that: when you know the rules, you can bend and break them, and to be totally honest, not like I'm anything but, I f*cking hate the fact there's no apostrophe there, when there should be one, in my esteemed opinion.

So f*cker, I put it there. Deliberately. Knowing the rules, I break them, just like I jaywalk, speed, spit on the sidewalk and take a dump in your mother's toothless mouth.
