Piracy Helps Boost Box Office Revenues for Independent Films?

Piracy Helps Boost Box Office Revenues for Independent Films?Submit Comment
Back in January, the MPAA successfully shut down the popular website MegaUpload, making it far more difficult for pirated films to be spread on the internet. The goal was to prevent people from watching movies for free, and thus hurting the overall box office results.

But researchers from Munich School of Management and Copenhagen Business School believe that shutting down MegaUpload had the opposite effect on film revenues. The work was published in a paper called "Piracy and Movie Revenues: Evidence from MegaUpload," which looks at similar films from before MegaUpload's demise and after.

The study shows that there hasn't been much impact on big-budget films, but smaller, independent movies took a hit. It turns out that file-sharing has been used "to spread information about a [movie] from consumers with zero or low willingness to pay to users with high willingness to pay."

In other words, people used MegaUpload to download movies that they would never normally pay for. But after watching them, and enjoying them, they ended up spreading their positive reviews on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, causing friends to seek out these films and pay to see them.

Not maybe, quite sure mate. You can count them on the tip of your fingers.

Yeah, but piracy definitely hurt the bigger films too, like the Avengers and TDKR...oh wait, no it didn't.

20 Independent films from 2012 on IMDB

I wouldn't watch any of them for free or otherwise.
sedibus writes:

And I wouldn't pay to watch any recent Hollywood f*cking film.
sedibus writes:

and I'm not watching all of them, you know.

So, not even for free I would see some.

I didn't pay to The Dark Knight Takes a crap and it Rises, nor for Looper, not even for the Spider-man Reboot piece of sh*t flick, what a sh*tty f*cking movie it is.

Hollywood system is a piece of sh*t, almost, if not all the movies made by this crap industry are C.I.A. propaganda, period.

Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Paul Newman, etc., all those fag free mason bitches, with their f*cking rituals, like sh*t.

MPAA should shut down China. Maybe then piracy will lower.

sedibus writes:

@Kurskij:

MPAA should shut themselves out, oh wait, they wouldn't be getting any money afterwards, 'ennit?

This f*ckers hate piracy because they aren't getting anything from it, except free publicity.

But hell, those that rate movies are mostly pederast priest, so there you go, mate. Cheers

Ratings agency is a good thing per se. But MPAA is a wicked lot.

They always let the press in for free and radio stations are also giving away tickets so they need to stop bitchin

For everyone one person that sees a movie for free
I would say maybe 3-7 people pay

People should read the actual results of the so-called study:

"We find that the shutdown had a negative, yet insignificant effect on box office revenues."

In other words, BULLsh*t, from the very authors themselves.

The best one can say then is that the so-called study found that MegaUpload's shutdown, specifically, had virtually no effect on movie sales, independent or otherwise, and more importantly, if I had no read this news on a better website, I'd be making ignorant comments too.

Right. Then who will manufacture our DVDs, BluRays, players and theater equipment?

Talking about cutting off your balls to spite your d*ck.

For anyone who cares, check out Mel Gibson'S Get the Gringo. Pretty decent independent film.
minkowski writes:

Get the Gringo was almost as good as anything I saw in 2012.

That includes Urethreus, The Dark Knight Fails, and The Scavengers.

Seven Psycopaths was great! Sam Rockwell was awesome. I don't know if that's counted as independent though.

John Mink, I'm curious- What exactly do you consider a "good" movie? What makes one and what would you name?
