"Rise of the Guardians," "Life of Pi" and "Red Dawn" Bomb During Record-Breaking Thanksgiving Weekend

"Rise of the Guardians," "Life of Pi" and "Red Dawn" Bomb During Record-Breaking Thanksgiving WeekendSubmit Comment
This Thanksgiving weekend audiences had a choice between three new releases and a bunch of blockbusters. The result ended up being a record $290 million earned between Wednesday and Sunday, easily surpassing the 2009 Thanksgiving weekend, which saw revenues of $270 million.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" took first place again, grossing an additional $43 million for a worldwide total of $578 million. "Skyfall" landed in second place with $36 million for a worldwide total of $790 million, making it the highest-grossing James Bond movie.

But despite record numbers, all three new release weren't able to benefit. "Rise of the Guardians" animated movie grossed only $24 million, but cost $145 million. The film has a 74% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Ang Lee's possible Oscar contender "Life of Pi" also performed poorly, grossing only $22 million, despite having a $120 million budget. The movie has a 87% fresh rating.

MGM's "Red Dawn" remake ended up in seventh place with $14.6 million. It cost $65 million to make, which will make it difficult for the film to become profitable. The new movie has a lousy 11% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight released "Hitchcock" in 17 theaters, grossing $300,799, which is $17,694 per screen. The film has a 61% fresh rating and will likely expand next weekend.

That's what happens when you make utter pretentious bullsh*t aimed at contrivedly winning Oscars.

Stick to sucking, Lee. You get the gold medal there for sure.

National Review says Life of Pi is about one man's search for God.

Didn't they do that in Star Trek 5? And look how that turned out...

'... easily surpassing the 2009 Thanksgiving weekend' --- ahh, it's 2012. How about comparing box office takes with 2011? 2009 is another whole economy away. In similar news... Thanksgiving weekends box office take greatly exceeded the same weekend of 1916.

So how did Life of Pi bomb?

It grossed 20 million it's first weekend in America despite having any white stars.

It will need to gross 360 million dollars internationally to be profitable in theaters (which most movies are not), it doesn't seem as hard when it will stay in theaters after it gets nominated for several Best Picture and gets a good release in 3D crazy China thanks to Ang Lee.

Rise of the Guardians was a very well done kids flick. Took my 7 yr old daughter to it opening day and we were both thoroughly entertained by the storyline and characters (she stood up and clapped w a big smile on her face).

As a parent, that's all you can ask for with most movies out there for kids today.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Lust, Caution are the only good Ang Lee movies. It must be the commas.

**As a parent, that's all you can ask for with most movies out there for kids today.**

Yeah well I guess it's too much to ask for your 7-year-old daughter, as a child, to not have to live with having a mother who calls herself BOOBS MCGEE on a movie message board.

Yeah, I wonder if your kid would stand up and clap with a big smile knowing that.

Silly ho...

She was also the one who refused to vote for Romney because he has never, and I quote "sat his ass on a bar stool".

And to think being a drunken slob barfly is a prerequisite for being elected.

Guess that explains Bill Clinton.

Meh. And people wonder why I hate the so-called "modern woman", aka the whores of Babylon.

Considering both Twilight and Skyfall are on way more screens and have huge fan bases behind them, and Life of Pi is on far fewer screens it didn't do too bad. The top three films are at a combined 9600 theaters and PI is at less than 3000 theaters $30 million is nothing to sneeze at. In actual numbers the top two films are playing on more than 8,000 screens, when you see numbers like 4060 theaters that simply means the film is playing at that many theaters not the number of screens in some places Twilight is playing on 3 screens if that happens at all the theater chains it is playing at that means the movie is actually playing on 12,000 screens. Since Twilight made an average of $10,723 per theater & The Life of Pi made an average of $7,670 per theater, I would say not bad for a non-tent-pole or sequel film.

Ah Mink- You gotta let go of the election.

And Punky- don't hate. The movie was great. And my 7 yr old skipped first grade and is in second bc she is a smarty pants. Having a sense of humor (aka a silly screen name) makes you a better parent.

It's not just an "election", its the future of my country, and unlike some, I think of her as just a little more than a candy store the plebs can loot.
