Paul Thomas Anderson Wants to Direct a Comedy Like "Airplane" or "Ted"

Paul Thomas Anderson Wants to Direct a Comedy Like "Airplane" or "Ted"Submit Comment
Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of "There Will Be Blood," "Punch Drunk Love," "Magnolia" and "Boogie Nights," has been nominated for five Oscars but constantly has trouble raising money for his movies, mostly because they are not big money-makers.

It looks like he's getting tired of making films that very few people go out to see, especially since he believes that mainstream movies (like Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy) can actually have a high level of artistic skill. Unfortunately, "I've never really been asked to do [blockbusters]," he recently stated. "They don't come to me with those."

So he's planning to change all that by possibly directing a mainstream comedy. Speaking to Moviehole, he said: "I'd like to make a film like 'Airplane.' That never gets old. Or 'Ted.' It was a big hit. Why? Because it's great. People aren't that stupid, that movie's a hit because it's hilarious."

A smart, well-shot comedy? Nah. It'll never sell. Especially to people who vote Obama.

Ted was an incredibly stupid movie though.

He should do a Comedy about Hollywood.

Boogie Nights had a fair bit of comedy in it. Punch Drunk Love as well. So he is more than capable. But if he wants to do mainstream, I would aim higher than the comedy genre. Still, it would be a good way of getting his foot in the door to the larger budget films he seems yearning to do now. I'm just curious why the sudden urge to do popcorn movies. Not feeling the love, PT? The guy is a masterful director, so I would like to see him get a shot. His films usually have such polarizing subject matter that I'm sure almost NO Hollywood exec would think of him for their big budget project. But he can direct circles around some of his so-called peers.

A comedy about Hollywood? I would so watch that.

@Black Dynamite

Black Dynamite was incredibly stupid, albeit a very funny flick. So was Ted IMO. The chemistry between Wahlberg and the bear made the whole thing click, plus the pop-culture references galore. A little too schmaltzy towards the end, which, agreeably, brought the movie down a few notches.

What he says makes sense, but easier said than done....

Good luck with that...

Looks like he thought that having old farts from AMPAS sucking his d*ck is no fun when they don't give him anything.

"For the time being money and hot bitches is what I'm aiming for!" - thought Paul.

How can he say 'airplane' and 'ted' in the same sentence? Airplane is a f*cking masterpiece,one of the funniest comedies of all time.Ted was a forgettable one time watch comedy.
