"Wreck-It Ralph" Breaks Box Office Record, "Skyfall" Continues to Dominate

"Wreck-It Ralph" Breaks Box Office Record, "Skyfall" Continues to DominateSubmit Comment
"Wreck-It Ralph" animated film grossed $49 million this weekend, taking first place at the domestic box office and breaking the record for the biggest opening for an animated Disney film. "Tangled" was the previous record-holder with $48.8 million back in 2010.

"Ralph" took in another $12 million from overseas for a worldwide debut of $61 million. The film cost $165 million to make and has an 84% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Denzel Washington's "Flight" ended up in second place with $25 million from only 1,900 theaters, half the amount of theaters that "Wreck-It Ralph" opened in. Since "Flight" cost only $31 million to make, it's already on its way to becoming profitable. Washington is already considered a front-runner for a Best Actor Oscar nomination. "Flight" has a 77% fresh rating.

RZA's "The Man With the Iron Fists" landed in fourth place with $8.2 million. It cost $15 million to make, which means that it will likely become profitable. The film has a 55% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, the new James Bond film "Skyfall" has now grossed $287 million in just ten days. It has a 95% fresh rating and is set to open in the US this upcoming weekend.

Growing up, Wreck-It Ralph's parents kept chained to a basement wall his little demented brother, Rape-It Ron.

Jesus, where does 165 million go for an animated film? It would have been cheaper just to film it live-action.

Hell, the budget for The Matrix, which we all agree had superb effects in an age where computers were a hell of a lot slower and more expensive, was 63 million, and that adjusted for inflation, is 84 million, so you're going to tell me an animated film cost twice as much as The Matrix in 2012 dollars?

Now look at the voice talent. Nobody. John C. Reilly, who has the perfect face made for radio, and Sarah Silverman, who isn't worth sh*t unless she's talking nasty, so again, where did the money go?

I can only guess in licensing fees for Sonic et al.

Any other suggestions?

no idea :-)

Looks like Denzel is always bankable even when he's 57 years old.

"Tangled spent six years in production at a cost that has been estimated at $260 million which, if accurate (and adjusted for inflation), would make it the most expensive animated film ever made and the second most expensive film of all time."

Something just ain't right with Disney...and this is the company that will make more Star Wars films?

@Mink

I'm assuming a lot of the numbers reported for film budgets may be purposely exaggerated so there is less profit in the books in the eyes of the IRS or some sh*t. I mean, didn't Warner Bros. claim a loss for one of the Harry Potter films that grossed like a billion?

I also think they exaggerate budget numbers to draw publicity

Agreed, who snorted, approx $135 million of cocaine? This movie looks like it was made for 25 million.

Skyfall already opened over here, a solid 9 as a whole but the last 30 minutes where f*cking amazing, Road to Perdition comes to mind but whatever, it's a completly unexpected - old fashioned turn. Dench and Bardem are incredible as usual. Craig tries hard but those two are mesmerizing. As I said, a solid 9.

Saw Skyfall for the second time. Liked it more, didn't love it. Realised a must have fallen asleep for the middle half an hour the first time around. It's definitely James Bond Begins though the similarities to Batman are hilarious. *SPOILERS*

Parents killed made him who he was. Lived in a mansion with a groundskeeper (Alfred) raising him. Bad guy choosing to get captured only to escape. James Bond having to find himself again and rise from his physical mess. The scene at the end in the house is like R rated Home Alone as well I was waiting for him to say "this is my house and I gotta defend it."

It was a good Bond film, still preferred Casino Royale and Daniel Craig looks like a 60 year old ape.

Casino Royale and Quantum are much better than Skyfall IMO. It was good but not as good as any of these 2.

Tangled spent a lot more time than 6 years in production. That albatross started and stopped and re-started like 3 times, each time a complete do-over. Something like 10 years. I actually think it's a pretty good film.

And YAY for Flight. Now maybe I can get another job in features and stop whacking off in reality TV.
