Watching Horror Films Can Burn Almost 200 Calories

Watching Horror Films Can Burn Almost 200 CaloriesSubmit Comment
The University of Westminster performed a study to measure how many calories an average person burns while watching horror films. Scientists recorded the heart rate, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide input of a group of people, and discovered that scary movies increased calorie-burning by a third.

"Each of the ten films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies," said Dr. Richard Mackenzie. "As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline. It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to burn a higher level of calories."

Out of the movies that were testes, "The Shining" ended up being the biggest calorie-burner, with a whopping 184 calories. "Jaws" took second place with 161 calories, and "The Exorcist" came third with 158 calories. These numbers are equivalent to going for a 30-minute walk. Check out the full list below.

1. The Shining: 184 calories

2. Jaws: 161 calories

3. The Exorcist: 158 calories

4. Alien: 152 calories

5. Saw: 133 calories

6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories

7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories

8. The Blair Witch Project: 105 calories

9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 107 calories

10. [Rec]: 101 calories

We now have a pseudo-scientific ranking for a film's 'scare factor'.

Tomorrow, the University of Timbuktu will show us how they transmuted lead into gold using baking soda and a toilet bowl brush.

If I lost anything watching Paranormal Activity - it was brain matter.

I lost more calories thanks to a surge of adrenaline when "The Expendables" was announced.

I swear there is nothing scary about the Exorcist. Its a misunderstood Comedy.

Hmmm. Sex burns calories, horror movies burn calories.

Fatties need to pay attention instead of heading to weight watchers....

I wonder if the test group had seen these movies previously, and if so, how scary could they actually be?

You burn about 60 calories an hour just sleeping, and 68 while sitting.

This study was also funded by a DVD rental company, by the way.

I feel like the only calories burned during The Blair Witch Project would be from walking out of the room.

"Paranormal Activity: 111 calories"

Great, that should negate the gallon of popcorn you take in with you. Even more so if you're black, as after the first scare you've spilled all your popcorn over everyone around you whilst shouting "ohhh heeeyyyaalllll NOOOOO"

in a related study, it was discovered that watching Uwe Boll films burns more brain cells than a gallon of grain alcohol.

No the true calorie burn is from getting up and walking out the theater showing some of the recent "horror" films which are about 99% crap.

The real question is how many calories does a women lose/gain during a blowjob, after which she swallows.

Now there's a scenario worthy of scientific testing.
