How "Argo" Mission Fooled Steven Spielberg

How "Argo" Mission Fooled Steven SpielbergSubmit Comment
Ben Affleck's "Argo" is a true story about a CIA mission to get American hostages out of Iran. The plan was to send Tony Mendez (played by Ben Affleck in the film) into Iran pretending to shoot a movie, but then leave with the hostages, who would act like the film crew.

To make sure nothing goes wrong, Mendez got help from some of Hollywood's top producers. They wrote a script, created a poster, took out full-page ads in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, and created a company, called Studio Six Productions.

According to Mendez, the operation didn't just fool the Iranians, but many people in Hollywood. "By the time Studio Six folded several weeks after the rescue, we had received 26 scripts, including some potential moneymakers," said Mendez. "One was from Steven Spielberg."

Mendez doesn't say which film Spielberg was shopping, but The Playlist believes it was "ET," since the hostage crisis took place when the director was shooting "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and Columbia Pictures just turned down "ET."

Studio Six Productions should have filmed ET in Iran which would have been short for "Exit Tehran".

Spielberg lost his balls after Raiders, went mainstream with everything he's done since... what I find truly sad about Spielberg is that after all his rubbing elbows with Lucas, that balless, chinless f*ck still never asked him to direct a star wars flick... one can only imagine what a cinematic turd in the punch bowl like the Phantom Menace might have looked like with anyone but Lucas at the helm.

@Tanman

Argo was fantastic. One of my favorite films this year so far.

Side note everyone: Caught an advanced screening of "Silver Linings Playbook" last night and your mileage may vary on superstars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence but they were fantastic in a fantastic film. David O Russell did nice work once again. Highly recommend checking it out when it hits theaters.

Also Jennifer Lawrence is looks so much hotter as a brunette.
