Stan Lee's Company Suing Disney for Billions and Full Rights to Marvel Characters

Disney is currently trying to overturn a $319 million judgment over profits from "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire." And now comes word that the studio is being sued for a portion of the $5.5 billion that Disney earned from their Marvel films.

Stan Lee Media Inc (SLMI) claims that Stan Lee signed over the rights to comic book characters that he created or would create to the company back in October 1998. Lee was paid in shares of SLMI, which proved to be worthless since the company unsuccessfully filed for bankruptcy in 2001. He is no longer involved with SLMI.

Lee went on to sell the rights to the characters, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, The Avengers, The X-Men and more, to Marvel in November of 1998. Disney then bought Marvel for $4 billion in 2009 and went on to make "Iron Man," "Iron Man 2," "Captain America," "Thor" and "The Avengers," which become the third highest-grossing film of all time.

SLMI claims that they own all the characters and Disney never had the right to make those movies. If the company wins, that would mean that all Marvel characters may end up under the same roof. Unfortunately, that roof would be owned by a company that can't avoid bankruptcy.

I'm just wondering why it took so long for them to come out with this information, why now? It would be nice to have all the characters together with the same company just not one with with money issues.

Well done stan, what a nice time to f*ck things up for marvel.

i am back homies!

Stan sold the rights to Marvel!

Marvel was bought by Disney.

I fail to see how Stan Lee Media Inc owns the rights since they sold them...and went bankrupt.

Might be more to this story, but i smell a lost cause for SLMI

Not sure why everyone is saying its stan lee suing....its not. Its a company baring his name that he has not been involved with for over a decade now. He sold the rights to that company which reniged on payment to lee because the company was worthless. So he then sold the rights again for actual money. So its the company against disney not stan against disney....

So, Lee sold the property twice? I don't get it, I don't think Lee has a leg to stand on legally. I understand he feels he deserves some compensation for creating such great characters, and yeah, he did invent them, however he sold them, twice even. Tough tits. The lesson here is to be very protective of what you create and never give up full ownership.

Did any of you read the part that says "Lee was paid in shares of SLMI, which proved to be worthless since the company unsuccessfully filed for bankruptcy in 2001. He is no longer involved with SLMI" Errrrr meaning it ain't Stan that is suing Disney! It's a company that is his name sake only! T.T
minkowski writes:

So. I guess no more cameos for Lee, then.

"Did any of you read"

Dude, no one here reads, articles or otherwise.

And I think everyone is missing the part where the article says Stan the Cameo Man was paid for the rights to Marvel character in *WORTHLESS SHARES*, or in another words, he was paid, arguably, NOTHING, which might just void the original contract.

Thing is, why'd he wait so long? And were the shares worthless in 1998, or later, and WHY were they worthless? And why give a sh*t, Stan, unless you're hungry. Not like you have a lot of life left in you.

The above article is all kinds of empty.
MarshallErikson writes:

Guys come on, I think you're all misreading the article. Stan Lee has NOTHING to do with this. It even says that his old company, "Stan Lee Media Inc (SLMI)"is the one suing Disney. It ALSO says "[Stan Lee] is no longer involved with SLMI." Stan Lee took the rights back when SLMI went bankrupt and sold them back to Marvel instead. Now, the old company is saying that since Stan sold to them first, that they should maintain the rights.

So again, Stan Lee is not suing anyone. At all.

Lawyered.

Hard to get people to believe he didn't approve of these movies being made when he appears in almost all of them.......
minkowski writes:

I read the article three times. I got confused when Alex injected the fact Stan Lee was paid in worthless stock, supposedly, so yeah, re-reading it and omitting that part, you're right, the lawsuit has nothing to do with Stan Lee.

Here's a PROPER news artcle NOT written by an imbecile.

article title should have been:
stan suing disney that owns marvel you know that company that stan sold the rights of the characters to.... yeah that one
