New Line Drops "Gears of War" Video Game MoviePosted: October 10th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Back in 2007, New Line Cinema hired Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean) to write a script for a movie based on the "Gears of War" video game franchise, which has generated more than $1 billion in sales since the first game was released in 2006.
Now comes word that New Line has abandoned the film in order to focus on "The Hobbit" films. Epic Games, the creator of the game, is currently meeting with producers and other studios in hopes of finding a new home for the movie. No word of Len Wiseman (Total Recall, Underworld) is still attached to direct.
"Gears of War" revolves around muscular human soldiers tasked with protecting planet Sera from alien creatures known as the Locust Horde.

The problem with adapting these games to screen is that most FPS video games are inherently storyless, and with the fact other more popular games like Mass Effect and Diablo III have somewhat supplanted Gears of War, I'm not sure the window of opportunity for making the movie is even still open.
They shouldn't have taken so long to bring the film to fruition.

I think a halo movie has almost no chance of happening anymore. Microsoft has seen to that, for th better i think. Too much risk for them if people dont like it. However i think both gears of war and mass effect have great potential in cinemas. Both were made in a cinematical way, story wise and visually. Whatever deficiencies gears has in story could be fixed given the right writers and casting. Mass effect is almost perfect the way it is. Tons of dialouge already written in game that could be adapted to work better for the screen, while the overarching story is already perfect. I think it has the potential to fill the gap in the adult sci fi world that the likes of the the original star wars trilogy and blade runner have left open. However i believe that unless a studio or studio's are willing to go all in with it(financing, writing, directing, acting, advertising) than

Vincere: Blomkamp did a great short on what halo movie might look like. But yeah, if Jackson couldn't get it off the ground - things look dim. The setting looks perfect cinema wise though. Never played mass effect or gears of war though.

Soldiers vs Aliens. Seems like the easiest idea, but James Cameron with Aliens is still the only one to do it well. I don't get it. What is wrong with everybody?
