Director of Keanu Reeves' "47 Ronin" Lost Control of the Film

Posted: September 20th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Director of Keanu ReevesSubmit Comment
Carl Rinsch never directed a feature film, but was in talks to helm such big-budget movies as "Prometheus and "Logan's Run." He was eventually hired to direct "47 Ronin," which had a budget of $175 million, and has now crumbled under the pressure.

Insiders called the production process a "nightmare," which forced Universal Pictures to step in to save the film. After the initial shoot, the studio noticed that the movie lacks one important thing, the film's star, Keanu Reeves. Reshoots were scheduled in order to add the actor into the movie's pivotal action sequence. Several other scenes were shot as well, in order to give Reeves more of a presence.

The budget has now ballooned to $225 million, and Universal has removed Rinsch from the editing process. There was an attempt to fire him, but union rules don't allow that. Universal co-chairwoman Donna Langley stepped in to finish the film.

Problems were noticed early on, when Universal pushed the movie from it's November release to January of 2013. Soon after, it was pushed again, this time to December of 2013.

This story is lacking some other facts as it's not very coherent such as why was the initial shoot made without the main actor on the first place???

Actually most studios have been doing this lately and somehow they've been financially successful at it (cheap directors and easier to control). For instance the dude directing Thor 2 has never helmed a big budget flick. Same thing with the director of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine". Rupert whatshisface did a great job with 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' in spite of his experience. Plus several other f*ckers I don't feel like remembering right now have been given projects they have no experience with. Its pretty much a roll of the dice the studios take because they're too f*cking greedy and controlling.

How do you shoot an entire movie and it doesnt have the star of the film?

Carl should do a Tony Scott (RIP).

After the initial shoot? How far did they get into production before deciding Rinsch isn't the mensch? Why didn't Keanu say whoa, where's my role? Why the hell are they hiring these incompetent buffoons to helm mega-expensive films? Greed?

It's like Hollywood operates in an entirely different universe with entirely different natural laws.

There's a bomb in this movie. If it goes under a $220 budget the movie explodes!

@Avirex
The guy doing Thor 2 has directed episodes of game of Thrones, so he's in the same ball park as for genre. But this Carl guy has no experience and almost a Titanic budget. Seriously stupid.

The Wrap article "47 Ronin" fictionalizes one of Japan's most legendary samurai tales, the story of a group of 18th century warriors who aim to avenge their master's death. Reeves, in his first starring role in a tentpole project since "The Matrix" trilogy, plays the lead in a mainly-Japanese cast".

Why the f*ck would they even consider casting Keanu in the first place. Even with his mixed heritage being a fraction of Chinese/Hawaiian but zero Japanese? The 47 Samurai are suppose to be authentic Japanese? This story is "National Legend" stuff in Japan and sounds more like a remake of The Last Samurai only with Keanu's wooden acting.

This is surprising to hear. I saw a short by this guy and he seemed pretty capable.

@Taco

Right, but my point was not whether he has directed anything in the same genre. It was about the fact he is another in a long list of people given huge budget films without precedence. A 'Game of Thrones' episode of the week doesn't cost $150 million to make. Neither does it involve the convoluted studio involvement and egos that come with that extended budget.
