Why Was Tobey Maguire Cut from Ang Lee's "Life of Pi"?

Why Was Tobey Maguire Cut from Ang LeeSubmit Comment
There's a lot of talk about Ang Lee's "Life of Pi," which is being mentioned as a potential awards contender. But before the film hits theaters later this year (November 21st), the director will make one change. He'll cut Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) out of the movie.

Maguire was set to briefly appear as a writer who interviews the main character. The actor was the biggest star in the film, which is filled with mostly unknowns. But Lee felt that Maguire's performance "wasn't working" and re-shot all of his scenes with Rafe Spall (Prometheus, Anonymous).

"I fully support Ang's decision to go a different direction for this role in 'Life of Pi,'" said Maguire. Lee responded: "To be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast."

Lee could have replaced Maguire before the film started shooting, but the fact that he waited this long, likely means that he felt the actor's performance was awful.

His precence must disturb the flow of the movie.

Tobey got paid so he doesnt give a sh*t.

Besides does anybody really say,"hey did you hear about that new Tobey Maguire joint? "

I don't care about Tobey Maguire, I'll only be watching this just because it has the most beautiful animal in it.

I also heard that Maguire earned a Lot of money in illegal poker games, so he def doesn't give a sh*t!

Why is the last paragraph in Italics? - Goddammit WP (also look at the title of the Gnomeo and Juliet article)

and on the point being made.. I don't like Tobey Maguire AT ALL. But if Lee decides to change a character, that doesn't mean he sucked..

But then.. Tobey Maguire is a tool. So it's possible.

He was dumped because of that darn parker's Luck. They should cast andrew garfield instead.

Tobey Maguire is one of those actors who can only play one part: pathetic nerd. Which leads me to the conclusion that he's not acting at all and is actually just being himself. All I can think of when I hear his name is this picture:

I like Rafe Spall, I couldn't really take him seriously in Prometheus though but then again I couldn't take anything seriously in that film.

True there was an article in variety or something. Maguire, Affleck and a couple of others were said to have won millions, charges were pressed against the organisers.

"likely means that he felt the actor's performance was awful"

Considering that I don't remember a single bad performance from Maguire (gotta give it to guy, even if I don't really like him) and that role seems tailor made for him, it's most likely that among the cast of unknowns he stood out too much and it interfered with the flow of the movie.

Lee worked with Maguire in the past and wanted him for one of the roles in "Blazing Asses" (Brockback Mountain) but he wasn't available. So I bet he knows how to get a needed performance out of him.

Lee worked with Maguire two times previous to this film, so it's a little peculiar that his impression of the guy's acting ability would vacillate at the turn of a hat, practically.

Then again, I don't really give a crap. I mean, who wants to see an Indian version of "Calvin and Hobbes" lost at sea anyway?

Tobey Maguire must have bad luck. His fourth Spiderman film gets cancelled. Then he gets kicked out of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". Now he gets cut from another big film.

Awful? That simply means after Spiderman, Tobey can do nothing good.... Well, talking seriously since when he has do a nice performance that deserves an award.....

So he was clearly cut because Lee felt Maguire ruined the international feel of the film, which is an irrational decision at best imo, yet somehow this translates to a terrible performance, even though it was a bit part?

Awful article, if you can even call it that.

"I mean, who wants to see an Indian version of "Calvin and Hobbes" lost at sea anyway?"

Calvin and Hobbes, yes, Indian anything, f*ck no.
