Todd Lincoln on Why Fox Rejected His Pitch for "The Fly" Remake

Todd Lincoln on Why Fox Rejected His Pitch for "The Fly" RemakeSubmit Comment
Hitfix caught up with director Todd Lincoln, who's out promoting "The Apparition," and asked him about "The Fly" remake he was working on about five years ago.

Lincoln explained that he loves the 1958 version and David Cronenberg's remake so much that he decided that it's a terrible idea to touch those properties. So he came up with a story that's based on "The Fly," but is also completely different.

"I found a really cool way into it," he explained. "So somebody still becomes a fly, but who becomes a fly, how they become it, what happens, is all completely different. A really outside-the-box take."

When he presented his version to 20th Century Fox, the studio immediately rejected it, stating that it was too strange and too dark. They instead decided to just "remake Cronenberg's version with sexy teenagers." At one point, Cronenberg himself was attached to direct, but that too fell apart.

"remake Cronenberg's version with sexy teenagers."

This pretty much sums up the current state of hollywood and what makes films successful. It's a part of film history that will be infamously known as the "Twilight generation". It makes me feel physically ill. Also don't ever remake the fly, nothing will be as disgusting as Cronenbergs version and no one will ever be able to play the part better than Goldblum.

Swat this project now before it buzzes around my life treads it's sh*tty legs on society!

Ok, I completely lose it when he started saying "is all completely different. A really outside-the-box take...." didn't understand what he was trying to say. It is more like he was rephrasing the sentence with the same sentence without a reason to be. No wonder, his movie is going to flop this weekend.....

I recall reading this science fiction story about people in the future. Something about time travel. Anyway, in the future, there's no adults, only beautiful teenagers and young adults, because after a certain age, you're forcibly euthanized.

I used to think that was some sort of stupid parable, but I wonder how far we are from that point when people can't even make a hard science fiction film without Twilighting it.

Then again, this is the country that authoritatively hides it's elderly so we don't have to see or hear them...

The Apparition currently has a 0% on RT, with most critics agreeing that its generic horror-fare, with one of the worst and most incoherent endings in years. Seems to me Mr. Lincoln is getting the John Wilkes Booth treatment in Hollywood.
