How Much Will "The Hobbit" Trilogy Cost?

How Much Will "The Hobbit" Trilogy Cost?Submit Comment
After Peter Jackson said that "The Hobbit 3" may actually happen, it took only a few weeks for Warner Bros to confirm that "The Hobbit" will become a trilogy. But what happened behind the scenes was a lot more complicated.

According to insiders, the original deal to make two "Hobbit" movies was one of the most complicated in Hollywood history, since there are so many parties involved, including Warners, New Line, MGM and other rights holders. But everything eventually worked out and the two films ended up costing a whopping $500 million to make, not counting a very expensive marketing campaign.

So how did a third film come together so quickly? "If [any of the parties] had been a big hindrance, it wouldn't have happened," said one source. "It was such a short window of time to make this decision, if anybody had said 'no,' it would have been two movies."

So how much would this third film cost? Since the script for "The Hobbit 3" is still being written, it's difficult to give an exact number. But estimates place it between $125 million and $210 million. By the time marketing costs are included, almost $1 billion would have been spent on the trilogy.

Meanwhile, we have a look at the limited edition RealD 3D glasses that will be available in select theaters for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" this December.

Fact: there should have only been one film. Done. Sure make it a monolith of 4 (maybe 5) hours long, but that would be great. it would be like the new age viewing version of Ben-Hur or Lawrence of Arabia.

Weird 3d glasses. I guess it was forged by Dwarves deep under the mountains of Taiwan. That'll explain the increase in budget.

The cost is just data, but if Jackson does this right...he'll leave behind a great LOTR legacy & the benchmark for all fantasy films....a very high bar.

The complexity with the acting, S Fx, action, sets & just how well he told a multilayered/ multicharacter in 3 butt-numbing stories is a truly remarkable feat, IMO...
