Christopher Nolan Doesn't Like 3D, Neill Blomkamp Doesn't Like 48 FPS

Posted: July 19th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Christopher Nolan DoesnSubmit Comment
In a recent interview with Christopher Nolan, the director revealed that he prefers to shoot in 2D, rather than in 3D, simply because he feels 3D is a scam.

"I never meet anybody who actually likes the format, and it's always a source of great concern to me when you're charging a higher price for something that nobody seems to really say they have any great love for," he explained. "It's up to the audience to tell us how they want to watch the movies. More people go see these films in 2-D, and so it's difficult data to interpret. And I certainly don't want to shoot in a format just to charge people a higher ticket price."

"District 9" director Neill Blomkamp also prefers 2D to 3D, and goes on to say that Peter Jackson's and James Cameron's attempt to sell audiences on a 48fps movie may not work. For those not familiar with the term, 48fps refers to how many frames are shot per second. The industry norm is 24, and when you increase the frames, the image becomes clearer, something that bothered audiences when Jackson premiered footage from "The Hobbit." The common complaint was that it was too clear and looked like a soap opera.

"If you were to show a child who's six months now a 48fps movie... when they're sixty, it'll be as familiar to them as 24fps are for us now," Blomkamp explained. "But there may be an alien quality from 48fps; it has kind of a hyper-realism that takes away the cinema of it. I don't actually like 48fps. I prefer 24fps."

Why do this f*ckers suggests a 3d movie? Does it change the story? It doesn't. It just confusing, and it really makes me faint when i watch a movie. What the f*ck do this people when suggesting a 3d movie? Greedy f*ckers!!!

Nolan's right, of course, 3D is a scam, but Blomkamp is off base because 24 frames per second wasn't chosen for the superiority of the rate but for the economy of the cost of film, so there's nothing inherent about 24fps to say that's where things should be. Fact is, he and everyone else including myself is used to 24, but people will adjust to 48, just as they adjusted to color and sound, and the change from 16fps to 24fps. Get over it Neill.

I'm greatly anticipating evolving my framerate perception, to be honest.

I love the industry norm of 24, too. And the only reason, most these people are buying 3D tickets is that they don't have a choice. There will be three screens showing a movie you want to see and only one in 2D. A lot of of times you don't have a choice. Most of the time, if i miss the 2D film, I say f*ck it and either wait for the then next or go home, but with families you can't do that. Gotta make the kids happy because you promise them you are going to take them to see Spiderman and now you are paying extra money for some crappy 3D. f*ck YOU 3D!!!

funny how we've discussed the same topic a couple of days ago.

Nolan is right, 3D is a gimmick that only a couple of people got right (and it mostly applies to IMAX 3D, cause they are content with the quality - in regular theatres you never know if they have proper lamps in their projectors etc. etc. - so it can either look decent or like sh*t).

I have a lot of respect for Blomkamp after delivering a nearly flawless movie in all aspects with District 9. And all that on an average Apatow-comedy budget. He sure knows a lot more about technical aspect of cinema that I do now and perhaps ever will.

But I wouldn't dismiss 48fps before I've seen properly made product - be it The Hobbit or anything else.

As Mink said, the choice of 24fps was more practical than quality one - film is expensive, and back in the day it was even greater issue.

Also, when first experimented with after 16fps, people complained that 24fps clips look "too slow" (watch "The General" with Buster Keaton - that cartoony movement was considered normal; and rumor has it, that, while shot at 16-19 fps, Keaton himself wanted it to be projected at 24fps).

The thing is that all those complaints about motion sickness during Bourne movies action sequences might have not been there, were it shot at 48fps - that motion blur when camera moves fast is due to a low number of shots - camera is too slow to catch all the movement, thus creating blur.

So let's see the end result - The Hobbit is one of the most expensive movie in history, so it'll be a worthy example if 48fps is the new "movie look" or another gimmick.

minkowski writes:

"He sure knows a lot more about technical aspect of cinema that I do now and perhaps ever will."

I posted the other day a short from The Gnomon Workshop, made with essentially NO budget using high-end workstations, that was in the same ballpark figure of quality as District 9. To which of course no one replied.

I dunno why people keep saying he worked miracles. It's like spending 200 million on some piece of sh*t film is the normal thing, and not the bloated, cost-over-ran thing instead. I mean, did Neill have exorbitant insurance and union fees? How many middlemen? How many lawyers and extras and caters and electricians and...all of whom come with high costs because in Hollywood making a toothpaste commercial costs ten times more than it would in Latvia.

No, what Neill did isn't miraculous. What he did is what should be done all the time, but instead, we've been conditioned into thinking that Hollywood spending a quarter billion on a CGI-ladened turd like John Carter is normal SOP and that's just bullsh*t, and then, the f*ckers say they lost money even though the film grossed 600 million.
minkowski writes:

And by 'the film', I don't mean John Carter.
Kurskij writes:

"No, what Neill did isn't miraculous. What he did is what should be done all the time"

True, but he still managed to do that inside the studio system where having a trailer the size of some small island on Fiji parked in the middle of New York is an ok thing. So for me doesn't take away from the achievement.

"I posted the other day a short from The Gnomon Workshop, made with essentially NO budget using high-end workstations, that was in the same ballpark figure of quality as District 9."

Didn't see either a link or a short, otherwise would have taken an interest. A link please?

This:

http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/product/987/

In this tutorial, Robert Nederhorst (VFX Supervisor on Archetype) shows the entire process on how a shot came to be. He starts at the beginning by creating an HDRI using PTGui and ends with a final composite. After constructing the HDRI, Rob moves into Maya for shader development and rendering, using VRay to output the various passes and layers for the shot. Once the plate is cleaned up and the 3D character has been color graded and integrated into the shot, he constructs a production "gizmo" to give the artists control over various attributes of the composite. Rob then applies the final touches, like atmospheric effects created using PhoenixFD, film flicker and grain, along with realistic camera shake, lens flares and lens distortion to create the most believable result.

WP has been down (at least for me) for some time. Database error - happens every now and then.

Back to "ARCHETYPE".

Not mindblowing, yes. But for a short shot literally with no budget and on pure enthusiasm (and obviously talent and skill) - pretty amazing.

The best thing IMHO, is character design - this thing can can be used for a Hwood production and no one would complain. Great shades, some minor tics with motion in the opening sequence - but those are nitpicking compared to the overall quality.

And good ole' Robert Joy is a welcomed addition.

"The best thing IMHO, is character design - this thing can can be used for a Hwood production and no one would complain. Great shades, some minor tics with motion in the opening sequence - but those are nitpicking compared to the overall quality."

The idea I think is to turn it into a feature length film. Sounds like the idea is to drain some of Hollywood's power into outsider avenues, but I wonder if they, the powers that be, will find a way to cut Aaron Sims, who isn't an experienced director, off at the knees the way they killed Dotcom's plans for venture music.

I do like what I've learned so far, though. Sims talks about 'ambient motion' for his characters, which is almost like secondary animation, but in all it's something I hadn't considered until now.

"The idea I think is to turn it into a feature length film."

Yep, read that it was essentially a pitch for full length feature. John Davis bought it, and considering his late resume (Chronicle) there's a good chance Sims' will keep the job, the budget will be reasonble and end result - solid.

Archetype is on his resume, but with Bandito Bros' "Prototype" being on a fast track toward production (and it's essentially the same movie), they need to do it quickly.

Yeah, I think Prototype looks a hell of a lot better to be honest, and with RoboCop coming out, and god knows what other similar films I'm missing, there may be a sudden pinch in market demand for films like Archetype, which could, will, hurt it's chances.

Might be better if they get the go ahead to retool it. How? I have no idea. He's already written it as a machine-man-memory film.

You sure have high intellectual standards for someone who can't use punctuation marks.

Learn to answer questions properly, or at least have something to say on topic, you pathetic waste of air.

Stand by your words, not whine or try to let it slide like a bitch.

Out of all trolls here, you're one of the most useless, can't even troll properly. To fail even at that - one's gotta have talent, I give you that.

So learn, you worthless c*nt, even attention seeking sc*m needs something to keep others interested.

48fps is just hard to grasp. I'm sure it would/will take time to get use to it but really I love the movement in 24fps.
This is like debating film preservation in digital or film; or maybe disputing aspect ratios.

I sure as hell hope you're not 25. Because you're the biggest, f*cking retard your age on the planet. You're so stupid, you can't even fathom how simple you are.

Damnit. A topic worth discussing and everyone is butthurt cause they can't take the verbal stabs from mink. Yeah he can be the Internet equivalent of the Situation. But at least most of the time he contributes something and can easily hold his own ground when discussing most items. Unusually disagreeing with his opinions but he provides a lot of great evidence to certain subjects.
As for Ranger, I just enjoy his little quips here and there.

Anyhow, I await the envitable "fag" responses. But really grow up and have a sense of f*cking humor. Or at realize you're being trolled. It's the f*cking Internet for f*ck sakes.

I agree with both guys, I've played around with higher frame rates and it just doesn't look like a "movie" anymore, and 3D, well, UP looked great in 3D, live action, not so much.

I like reading this site and the comments, but Dark is basically stalking Mink and Ranger, FFS in his profile he states they are his hobbies, its not anger or hate you feel for them you stalking f*cking queer, its envy possibly lust, but its sick, you posted one comment TWICE obviously Mink was ignoring you but you pushed and finally got your way, getting your response and gaining his attention for a few minutes. The one with no hobbies life etc is YOU.

The topic at hand I actually believe if 3D is some well its awesome, if its not its useless @Amazing Spider-man I enjoyed but felt the 3D wasn't needed in this film. Journey 2 was a silly film but fun and the 3D (Only saw on 3D blu-Ray) was very well done. imo :)

I hardly ever see movies in 3D, usually because it's disappointing and distracting. It doesn't make me feel like I'm a part of anything, it just shows off gimmicky bullsh*t. As for the 48fps thing, I saw Jumper and Pineapple Express in that quality, and it was actually very interesting. But we'll see what happens with that in the future.

@Venom I'm pretty sure Dark's just been monitoring this website for years and wants to feel important somehow by arguing with his true loves, Mink and Ranger. He's sad.

@Dark You're sad.

Just got back from Batman. All I'll say is that it doesn't feel like it belongs in Nolan's franchise, it's far more like a Sam Raimi Spiderman film that a Christopher Nolan Batman film (and that includes the cheese), Batman is hardly in it, and Nolan lied (you'll understand what I mean by this when you see it).

Incredibly disappointing, and by far the weakest of the three.

Mink, I concede. You were right about The Dark Knight Rises, you were unfortunately wrong about Prometheus.

So far, in terms of films, 2012 has...sucked.
nawtnt writes:

Nolan doesn't like 3D? Yes.

I have respect for Nolan and Blomkamp since 3D is useless and wasted lots of money.

Can anyone named me a movie that shouldn't have been turned into 3D but did?

Stop threatening me. I know who you are, and you can easily be reported to the local New Jersey police, not that they'll do anything.

Having wasted my time on an idle legal reply, I'll say this, then: I reject the challenge because you are no challenge. You're short, you're skinny, you're bald. You look like Stevie Wonder on crack.

Yes 3D is a joke , and boohoo on 48 fps . I'm sick of people bitching about how tv looks to real after they spent $2k on a series 8 samsung of course it's gonna look like that it refreshes at 720hz . Looking forward to the evolution of film frame rates .
DeVries writes:

Saving Private Ryan battle scenes were shoot at a faster shutter speed and I remember my experience at the Theater at the time ; I felt like I was in the movie. I'm looking forward to see 48fps movies.
mustardayonnaise writes:
on July 19th, 2012 at 7:16:46 PM

@Devries, if by 'faster shutter speed' you mean a narrower shutter angle, then yes, that's how Kaminksi shot those scenes. But it was still 24 fps, albeit with much less motion blur. The crispness of the motion coupled with that desaturated look gave it that ragged, doc*mentary feel.

48fps will take some getting used to but I think the furor over it is a little overblown. First off, most people don't give a flying f*ck: they want to go to the movies, get some f*cking popcorn and check out for 2 hours. They could care less about the frame rate. For the remaining small percentage of people who consider themselves film snobs, there will be a period of adjustment and then people will move on...
