"Brave" Becomes Another Pixar Hit with $66 Million

"Brave" Becomes Another Pixar Hit with $66 MillionSubmit Comment
"Brave" dominated the domestic box office this weekend, grossing $66 million and becoming Pixar's thirteenth film to open in first place. The movie also scored the second-highest June opening for an animated film, behind Pixar's "Toy Story 3" ($110 million).

"Brave" had a similar opening as some of studio's other movies, like "Cars 2" ($66.1 million), "WALL-E" ($63.1 million) and "Up" ($68.1 million). Unfortunately, it cost $210 million to make, making it the most expensive Pixar film. "Brave" also has a 74% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, which is very low for a Pixar movie. Except for "Cars" (74% fresh rating) and "Cars 2" (38% fresh rating), all other Pixar films have ratings higher than 90%.

Meanwhile, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was expected to bring in $20 million this weekend, but grossed only $16.5 million, which was good enough for third place. 20th Century Fox is still happy with the result, considering that the film has no major stars and is R-rated. "Abraham Lincoln" cost $68 million, which means that a solid overseas performance will be needed to become profitable. The new movie has a fresh rating of 38%.

Meanwhile, the other wide release of the weekend was Steve Carell's "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," which took in only $3.8 million and landing in tenth place. The film has a 53% fresh rating.

On the specialty side, Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love" got off to a strong start, grossing $379,371 from only five theaters, for an incredible per theater average of $75,874. The film has a 55% fresh rating.

Is Woody Allen STILL making euro-romance films?? Jesus, the dude's been making that sh*t for, what, forty years? I know he's more arthouse than commercial mainstream, which is probably an understatement, but good god, did he ever think to make some other kind of film?

As for Brave, totally realistic lighting. If they ditched the cartoony characters, you'd have damned near photo-realistic results.

@minkowski
I'm guessing you never saw Match Point(2005),it's a very good "not Woody Allen movie" from Woody Allen.
