"GI Joe 2" Delayed Because of Channing Tatum?Posted: May 30th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Just recently we learned that Paramount Pictures decided to move the release of "GI Joe: Retaliation" from June 29th to March 29th, 2013, despite the fact that the studio has already spent millions on marketing the film. The studio claimed that it decided to convert the movie to 3D and will take the extra nine months to do so. That seemed like a logical excuse, since plenty of foreign countries (Russia, China) are adding new 3D theaters all the time.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
But Deadline looked deeper into the announcement and found out that it has more to do with Channing Tatum, the star of the first "GI Joe" film. If you notice, Tatum doesn't appear on any of the sequel posters. That's because his character is killed off in the beginning of the movie.
The studio tested "GI Joe 2" and found out that audiences weren't exactly happy with it. The big positive was the relationship between Channing and Dwayne Johnson, but since Tatum dies, that relationship comes to an end really quickly.
It's not surprising that movie-goers want to see more of Tatum, since the actor has become a big star after the success of "The Vow" and "21 Jump Street." So Paramount is planning to re-shoot parts of the movie to give Tatum more screen-time.

Goes to show they had the wrong people in the test audience. They should have included some of the regulars from WP who would have stood up and shouted "f*ck yeah" when Channing bought it (or give other audience members high fives). And hopefully that would have stuck. Now we have to endure nine more months of re-marketing and re-doing trailers. From the trailers we have seen, the film looked pretty polished.

I'll watch it because it's got Dwayne Johnson. Don't give a f*ck about the franchise (part 1 sucked ass) or Tatum..

The only time Channing Tatum being in a movie ever impressed me is when he got his pretty-boy-ass handed to him by Gina Carano. In fact, just put Carano in this movie instead.
And have a scene where the Rock tries to put the moves on her and she drop-kicks him in the ribs and says, "Sorry, I play for the other team," and then goes off and has an extended lesbian shower power-f*ck scene with Adrianne Palicki (in 3D!).
And then the Rock -- holding his ribs -- could be like, "Okay, that’s cool, but can I still watch?"

This might put more butts in seats, but it's still gonna suck due to the fact they're going to have to shoehorn more plot for a character that wasn't meant to be there and maybe cutting screen time for others.
I don't think Tatum is that good or he was exactly the issue...I'm blaming the marketing team for this one. They cut the trailer with Tatum as establishing him part of the sequel to cement it's a continuation of the plot & then people seeing the movie saw how bastardized it was when Tatum got killed at the beginning. I think it's more of advertising issue than anything else.
But now that it's mentioned, it is a hard sell to WIPE OUT ALL THE ACTORS FROM PART ONE, and expect no rrpercussions from it. Would've been better to move from a story arc and include them as cameos in passing the mission to an already established crew like the Rock and just keeping adding to the GI Joe roster like the cartoons...but the change to the OTT action from (director) Johnson's entry is welcomed, I think.
