"Men in Black 3" Tops Box Office, "The Avengers" Breaks More RecordsSubmit Comment
"Men in Black 3" was able to gross $55 million at the domestic box office this weekend, which is a lower than expectations and not good enough for a film that cost $230 million to produce, plus a pricey marketing campaign. While it underperformed at home, overseas the third installment took in $132 million, for a worldwide debut of $187 million. It's expected to end up with $202 million by the end of the long Memorial Day weekend. "MIB 3" has a RottenTomatoes fresh rating of 68%.

After four weeks, "The Avengers" finally had to settle for second place, but it did so with $37 million. The superhero film has now surpassed the $500 million mark domestically (in a record-breaking 23 days) and has grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, just short of the $1.33 billion earned by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2."

Once "The Avengers" passes "Deathly Hallows - Part 2," it will become the third highest-grossing film of all time, behind just "Titanic" ($2.185 billion) and "Avatar" ($2.782 billion).

The other wide release of the weekend was the low-budget horror film "The Chernobyl Diaries," which grossed $8 million and will end up at $9.4 million by the end of the four-day weekend. The movie, which landed in fifth place, has a 25% fresh rating.

Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" was also released, but in limited release. It surprised everyone by grossing $508,870 from just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. That $127,218 per location, the highest of 2012 and the highest ever for a movie released in four theaters. "Moonrise Kingdom" has a fresh rating of 95%.

His wife wanted him to initially take a year off (I guess she was jealous of his success, even though she benefits financially from it). Then more time passed... now, zzzzz...

I remember back when, Michael J. Fox was on a streak, the took a break and his career never recovered.

Ya gotta make hay while the sun is shining folks!

$55 million in a weekend, huh? Not too shabby.

Now imagine how much more money they'd make if they actually had their sh!t together...

What surprised me was why MOONRISE KINGDOM had that limited release? With all that starpower, they'd probably be able squeeze more juice out of it if it had the theaters/ money to back it up.

Funny, what MIB had too much of, MOONRISE lacked...

Men in Black...title gets a new meaning after viewers pooped on that sequel and decided to stay home...

230 million? Avatar was made for 230 million and had way better visuals. (yeah, i know 230 is only how much the studio put in and isn't taking into account other investers like JC himself etc...) BUT STILL! MIB3 cost waaaaayyyyyt oooo much to make.

Their profit margin wouldv been better if they didnt have to furnish BigWill with that abomination of a bus along with the traffic control, security, man hours and bribes it needed

Saw MIB yesterday. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. I have no idea why it cost $230 mill to make this garbage. Can't defend Will on this one at all. He has to try harder if he wants my $$$ anymore.

"It surprised everyone by grossing $508,870 from just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles."

Given the film's premise, and the fact it has done well in the tight heart of blue urban America, heavily liberal bastions, I predict large BO failure among even slightly more 'mainstream' audiences.

"After four weeks, "The Avengers" finally had to settle for second place, but it did so with $37 million."

You better hurry and eat all you can, Avengers, because here comes Prometheus galloping fast up the rear view mirror, more than ready to take your lunch.

""Men in Black 3" was able to gross $55 million at the domestic box office this weekend"

And that may mean no more MIB films, thank Vishnu, because even Tommy Lee couldn't be bothered to come back full throttle for this VFX-laden heap of horsesh*t.
Cinemaisdead writes:

Wes Anderson knows whats up and so do the people who went to see it. Good to see some people still appreciate good films.
minkowski writes:

^^I was just going off the premise, Cinema. Not the sort of film most Americans will pay to see. More for the self-described sophisticated class of people who watch films that are catered, intentionally or not, to their pretensions.

You have to have eight-story robots, flying aircraft carriers or gay vampires to get most Americans into theater seats in any large numbers.

Fantastic Mr. Fox was beautiful, for example, but sadly, barely watched.

Off subject, anyone see Game of Thrones last night? Quite possibly one of the best episodes of that series and any other on television. This one episode must have cost a fortune but it was well worth it. Best castle seige I've seen since LOTR Two Towers and by far the best performance from the queen and the midget I've seen so far. This show crushes anything else on tv like a mace to the temple.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the rest of Hwood should be taking notes from HBO. It's by far the best studio in the business as far as quality (and quantity) are concerned.

Pardon the MIB/Avengers interruption, but figured I'd change the focus to a product that far outshines this senslesss popcorn entertainment bullsh*t.
