"Battleship" Sunk at Box Office, "The Avengers" Still Dominating

"Battleship" Sunk at Box Office, "The Avengers" Still DominatingSubmit Comment
Universal Pictures' mega-budget "Battleship" hit theaters this weekend, but ended up grossing only $25 million, which was not enough to knock "The Avengers" from its top spot. "Battleship" cost $209 million, not counting the pricey marketing spend, and was expected to bring in at least $40 million over the weekend.

Universal has already recognized that the film will not become profitable, despite grossing $227 million internationally. Many are comparing it to Disney's "John Carter." It also doesn't help that "Battleship" has a lousy 36% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Meanwhile, "The Avengers" took first place with $55 million in its third week. Globally, the superhero film grossed $1.18 billion, which is the fourth highest take of all time.

Sacha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator" ended up in third place with $17.4 million. The $65 million comedy has a 60% fresh rating and will likely become profitable thanks to international tickets, which have already brought in $30 million.

The other wide release of the weekend was the comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting," which landed in fifth place with $10.5 million. Since the budget was only $30 million, it has already become a success due to strong foreign pre-sales. It has a 22% fresh rating.

To quote Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle .... " You sunk my Battlesh*t! "

Gee, Rhianna didn't get hit this hard since Chris Brown went all Ike Turner on her ass.

Just goes to show Peter Berg ... Michael Bay-style movies are 9 times out of 10 Summer Colonbusters ...

Can't blame Liam Neeson for this one. They have him on less than that crippy guy fighting the giant Yo-yos and f*cking Aliens ... Gee, ID-4 anyone ?

Speaking of "Independence Day 4", they would've had Will Smith in this one ... but then who wants to see a 4th-string ex-(c)rapper slap an alien for slipping his character the tongue and performing a reach-around.

This should put Ouija The Boardgame: The Movie in developmental hell for more years than I Am Legend had.

Didn't they f*cking learn from Clue: The Movie ? If you don't have f*cking Martin Mull, you've got no movie.

I heard this was so bad, Ryan Dunn actually had a narcoleptic seizure and spun 180 in his grave ... so the producers of this movie could dig up his corpse, pick off the remaining maggots and roaches and literally kiss his rigor morti' ass. Oh, and Bam can too.

They should've flung the crippy off the ship and had him doggy paddle like Lieutenant Dan. Then sink. Then drown. This add a laugh track.

.... yep, that would've been the only saving grace to this proof that Hollywood is full of brainless idiots. Even MORE brainless than those floating turds still writing for MAD Magazine.

Wow, this is so bad even HELEN KELLER saw this coming.

And she's dead.

And was blind when she was alive.

This is so bad, even Randy Quaid turned it down.

And Randy doesn't even turn down Ambien and good lemon meringue.

This is so bad, even Rush Limbaugh can't call it a slut.

Though he wants to.

Damn Taylor, you starred in two consecutive big budget flops? That's even worse than Ryan Reynolds. But hey that dude is still getting work so maybe you might too.

Battleship was one of the best summer movies I've seen in recent years. It's a shame it flops while an average movie like the avengers gets all the money.

Taylor seems to be just choosiog the wrong roles,i hope he doesnt give.Battleship isnt that bad,a decent movie.I just didnt like how they tried to make it so similar to Transformers.Avengers seems to have slowed down, maybe we way have the show of the year when Prometheus,TDKR and The Hobbit are released

Speaking of John Carter, I saw it and isn't bad at all! It's actually quite entertaining and very well done. Plus, the girl is a hottie and I had good time watching it.

Agree Bullit John Carter was no where near as bad as i feared it would be.

In fact same goes for Battleships too ...

Agree with Bullit.

@max
watched H&K yesterday ;)

battleship came out a month ago here, I went to see it and well, the action scenes are fun to watch but to story is totally lame and bad constructed.
Liam Neeson has like 10 minutes of screen time ;) dont expect much.

As for Taylor Kitsch, give him a break, anyone of you would've taken those roles, the lack of movie success is not his fault. Or do you believe Battleship would gross more with a major star in it? Maybe, but I ve seen the movie and the writers f*cked it up.

Battleship was one of the worst movies I've seen this year. I'm all for big, fun and dumb action-movies, but there's a limit for how much stupidity a movie can contain. Battle ship crossed that line.

I don't see why the studios is pushing Kitsch to be some sort of star, he's a very boring actor. A poor man's Sam Worthington. In his defense, John Carter is better than Battleship and perhaps not worthy to be a historical flop, but it wasn't very good or entertaining either.

Thank God it flopped in the American box-office! At least America chose to see a well-made mindless action flick instead of Transformers On a Boat. Maybe this will quickly put an end to any plans of other board game based films.

I guess that nixes the plans for the "Hungry Hungry Hippos" film with Nicholas Cage.

a couple of people saw battleship and said it was good they told me I would like the special effects, my nephew went to go see the dictator and said it wasnt that good

Taylor Kitsch is box office poison. Wolverine, John Carter, Battleship, need I say more? Hollywood might spontaneously combust if he and Rob Scheider ever do a film together.
minkowski writes:
on May 21st, 2012 at 2:36:52 PM

Kitsch isn't the poison, it's the cyanide swill in which he's always treading that sends the audiences a-running.

Battleship sucks. In other shocking news, I plan to have a bowel movement at some point today.
Max Rockatansky Junior writes:

This movie is so bad, they are trying to sign up the corpse of Ryan Dunn to star in the remake. The corpse of Whitney Houston will do the Rhianna role. And for the Liam Neeson character ? Tom Arnold.
kmccarney88 writes:

Good! Maybe this will send the message home to the studios that people are tired of mindless, $200 million firework shows.....and actually want a story to go along with it.

I am SO glad this movie failed....and will continue to fail. In a year this good, this movie never stood a chance.
