Joss Whedon Wants More Female Superheroes in "The Avengers 2"

Joss Whedon Wants More Female Superheroes in "The Avengers 2"Submit Comment
Since Marvel has yet to reveal which two characters will get their own movie before "The Avengers" sequel goes into production, we've been forced to guess, with the Hulk, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange being the likely candidates.

But according to "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon, there are not enough female superheroes in the franchise. "I think we need to get some more men on the team," he joked. Chris Hemsworth looked at Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson and agreed: "Yes, there are too few of us."

Whedon continued: "Studios will tell you: A woman cannot headline an action movie. After 'The Hunger Games' they might stop telling you that a little bit. Whatever you think of the movie, it's done a great service. And after 'The Avengers,' I think it's changing."

Giving Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) her own movie is something the studio has already talked about. And Whedon recently revealed that Wasp was in the original "The Avengers" script since she's one of the founding members. If "Ant-Man" ever happens, there's no doubt that Wasp will be in it. But which other female superheroes are out there? Entertainment Weekly believes it's worth looking at Scarlet Witch, Moondragon, Hellcat, and Mantis.

Question: Which Marvel female superhero should get her own movie?

Joss is like a million dollar version of that one creepy photographer that lures hot young chicks into his studio apartment to take 'artistic photos'.

Black Widow was the weakest character in the film. It just seemed so utterly useless having a chick run around with two tiny guns while the Hulk destroyed buildings and Thor transformed skyscrapers into giant lightning bolts.

A woman cannot headline an action movie. After 'The Hunger Games' they might stop telling you that a little bit.

I think the Hunger Games was a step back for women in films. The girl was supposed to be starving and trying to survive in a game of death but she looked in mint condition the whole time. Like her appearance and keeping her sex appeal is more important than making her a believable character. Alien/s was a good example of a female lead in an action film.

None. Just simple, I don't want this to became next bomb buster Elektra and Catwoman..... women just go to the kitchen, make coffee and eggs and stay out of this....

You always have to ask 3 questions first. What is logical concerning a character being established in a movie before an Avengers 2? What movie rights do Marvel/Disney have? What path will Marvel go, a grand alien path towards Avengers 2 or a grounded Earth path?

Concerning rights, Marvel/Disney may not have the right for Scarlet Witch. It's possible the rights are with Fox (-> X-Men/Magneto). Scarlet Witch wouldn't make sense at this point either.

The most logical introduction of new female superheros would be Mockingbird as she could be that Shield scientist who shows up in Captain America 2 to investigate the superhuman serum that created Cap and joins the team in Avengers 2. If they make an Ant-Man movie the introduction of The Wasp would be a logical consequence but not in that movie right away. Same with Hellcat and Doctor Strange. For characters like Moondragon, Mantis or Ms. Marvel it is too difficult to create a logical plot towards Avengers 2 to have them on the team. For Mantis and Ms. Marvel they would need to introduce the Kree on Earth first. Moondragon is all about Thanos and you can't just have him after the end credits and expect Moondragon to pop up in any logical way.

As I said, Mockingbird is easy to introduce and The Wasp and Hellcat are just along the path with Ant-Man and Doctor Strange but can't come without them.

Scarlett needs to know opening your mouth when your trying to look worried isn't all you have to do, and she did that a lot in the movie. Her character in The Avengers was the only weak part. She was so bland.

The wasp is a must as for more i will go with Mockingbird(for Hawkeye)As for the Scarlet Witch you have to bring in Quicksilver.I guess Moondragon would be nice to have for the telepath. Why not Jocasta.Ok that would be my pick wasp and Jocasta
Janus writes:

Valkyrie is rumored for Thor 2.

@python6: Jocasta sound sgood, indeed, but it wouldn't work without a lengthy plot that introduced Ant-Man first, than Ultron and finally Jocasta. Takes much too long. Sound more like stuff AFTER Avengers 2 or even 3.

why not rogue?

she was always a strong woman to me, especially the way Jim lee penciled her for the swimsuit issue. Of course the scarlet Witch was a strong lead for the house of M time line.

Ms Marvel would be the only way to go if they want someone to compete with the big boys. She one of the strongest out there and she's got a pretty unique disposition.

I keep reading about Marvel/Disney, but in my country Avengers were distributed by Paramount + I did not see the scene with everyone relaxing at the restaurant.

Whats up with that, can anyone help explain this?
Jabba_RT writes:

@ Dre-El,
Not sure about why Paramount was distributing but I do have an answer about the restaurant scene. That scene was filmed 2 days after the U.S. Premiere when Whedon had the whole cast back together. He thought it would be funny by bouncing a scene off of Downey Jr.'s shawarma comment in the film. In fact, if you've seen the scene, you'll notice that Chris Even's is resting his head on his hand. The reason for this was because he had grown a beard and to shoot the scene, they had to cover it up. So, they had a face prosthetic covering one side of his face and his hand covering the other.

So, not only did no one overseas see the extra scene, no one at the U.S. premiere saw it either.
Janus writes:

@Dre-EL: Before Disney bought Marvel, Marvel had a distributing contract with Paramount. Additionally Paramount owns the movie rights for Thor but told Marvel to do the movie for them. After Disney bought Marvel, Disney bought the distributing rights from Paramount but Paramount was/is allowed to leave their logo in Avengers and Iron Man 3 since they still get money out of the earnings. As far as I know, the movie rights of Thor are still with Paramount.

Ms Marvel. But I'm sure there would be a lot of feminists (including Whedon) saying she's too stereotypical and male fantasy developed character (cause of her costume). But f*ck that. She's awesome.
KillerCOck writes:

I'd only be interested in a She-Hulk or Storm (maybe have Black Panther appear in it.) solo female superhero movie or another Elektra done right.

Black Widow would be awesome if it wasn't ScarJo playing her.

I Never Liked Ms. Marvel but if they cast her right I might watch

*Sigh* Black Widow was AWFUL. Shouldn't have even been in the movie.

And if you want a real superheroine, then figure out a way to get Lt. Ellen Ripley a flamethrower and have her join the cast. She'd annihilate entire species of bad guys.

I think the battle against Thanos in the second Avengers movie will be a great chance for Marvel to introduce to "uninitiated" public new characters. The fire power to stop the "Mad Titan",an "Omega level" threat, is all the excuse Marvel needs.
After that,i think there will be a need for changes in the roster of Avengers.Characters wich hold their own franchises, can fall back, just like it happened in comic books, remain as "honorary" members, and maybe hold a small part in future movies, jump in at the last moment to save the day...
On the other hand,i think, now that Marvel has set the bases,to start the "crossovers" in the individual franchises.I mean, there are multicharacter mini series wich are great and can conclude in a time period of a year or so.This kind of number of movies already is out from Marvel, every year and can easily be increased after the Avengers popularity...
Just some ideas.Sorry for my English,i hope you got my point!

Joss Whedon Wants More Female Superheroes in "The Avengers 2"

Um....we don't...so thank you.
EarOne writes:

Marvel already said that the Maximoffs (Wanda and Pietro/Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) is fair game..can be used, as long as mutants, magneto (their dad) and x-men aren't mentioned. so, my first choice to be featured in an Avengers sequel would be Scarlet Witch..and her brother.

Wasp/Janet V.D. can also be featured, but not as a super hero. she can be a part of the SHIELD's scientist team, along with Hank Pym.

And Ms. Marvel..she should be introduced as a military liaison, Captain Carol Danvers or something. in the process of the story going cosmic, she then can be exposed to the other worldly powers that turn her into CAPTAIN (NOT Ms.) Marvel. or, if they want to also add a female AND a minority in the cast, they can use MONICA RAMBEAU as Photon or Pulsar.

i'm all for all of em being included in future Avengers movie, but ONLY if it suits and serves the storyline.
