"The Godfather" Prequel May Actually Happen

"The Godfather" Prequel May Actually HappenSubmit Comment
About a year ago, it was reported that Ed Falco wrote "The Family Corleone" book, which is a prequel to Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" novel and is based on an unproduced screenplay by Puzo.

Paramount sued Puzo's estate, claiming that it owns the publishing rights and that the book tarnishes the legacy of the films. But the two parties just agreed on a deal in order to let the book be released (view on Amazon). The deal was that all profits would be placed in an escrow account until this legal matter was resolved.

Paramount's lawyer noted that things could become more complicated if the book does well and "there's an attraction to do a movie."

Plot: New York, 1933. The city and the nation are in the depths of the Great Depression. The crime families of New York have prospered in this time, but with the coming end of Prohibition, a battle is looming that will determine which organizations will rise and which will face a violent end.

For Vito Corleone, nothing is more important that his family's future. While his youngest children, Michael, Fredo, and Connie, are in school, unaware of their father's true occupation, and his adopted son Tom Hagen is a college student, he worries most about Sonny, his eldest child. Vito pushes Sonny to be a businessman, but Sonny-17 years-old, impatient and reckless-wants something else: To follow in his father's footsteps and become a part of the real family business.

I think too much time has passed on this series to make this financially worthwhile for Paramount.

These films came out in 72&74(G3 in 90). Made for adults, if you were in your twenties then, you'd be in your 60's now. That's not exactly the audience studios are looking to get into theatres. And how would they market this to a younger generation?
"The film series your grandparents loved returns to cinemas this fall with the untold story...." BLAH BLAH BLAH
It would be a risky idea financially to pursue this.

Meh. This is only bring printed just because it's based on the fame of the original. The plot is also weak. Doesn't really have anything new to bring to the table.

Everything has already been covered (of what's worth covering) in the movies.

...fade to black.

well the only way for the youngsters to enjoy this is by putting gay actors like Tatum and Franco,Johah Hill then everybody will watch it.

and a token black guy and arab.

This was done before in the second "Godfather" movie.

This movie would essentially be about Sonny, which is awesome because he was always my favorite character, and I remember hearing they were trying to get Leo DiCaprio to play him years back.

They have to get a good actor and it could be worth watching.

I definitely share the same fear of having some Taylor Lautner get the role, but with a good diirector it could be ok.

Thinking back, Leo would have been f*cking perfect, in The Departed he essentially plays a version of Sonny Corleone, brash but honest, loyal, and with a "big heart." Which is how Sonny was described in the book.

Hate books, so i'm safe till a movie comes out

And even if it gets filmed, i still have to watch Titanic 2, the starving games, in the name of the king 2 and many other excellent prequels, sequels, spoofs and ripoffs ... So no timeee, no timeee
EarOne writes:

ughh...end this already. don't RUIN the legacy by making us HATE this new endeavor.

and enuff with all these unnecessary PREQUELS. who cares bout Sonny's beginning, he DIED tragically and prematurely, at the toll booth. as cool a character as he is, his beginning ain't really worth telling.
darthnoah writes:

f*ck it. Make it..

When it loses a billion dolars, I'll piss on the producers face..
billofill writes:

Well, this was the script that came up years ago that would of had Leo DiCaprio playing Sonnie. And they left out the part with His son taking over the family buisness after 3.
