Disney CEO on "The Avengers" Success

Disney CEO on "The Avengers" SuccessSubmit Comment
"The Avengers" crossed the $700 million mark at the worldwide box office in just thirteen days. Since it will easily gross over $1 billion, Disney CEO Bob Iger went on CNBC to discuss the film and what it means for the future of Marvel.

"'The Avengers' isn't just a film. It's a franchise from our perspective," he said. "Obviously, it was helped a lot by the success of the 'Iron Man' movies and of 'Thor' and 'Captain America.' From 'The Avengers' we get a chance to make 'Thor 2' (November 15th, 2013) and 'Captain America 2' (April 4th, 2014) and 'Iron Man 3' (May 3rd, 2013) and hopefully another 'Avengers' movie. So this one film that is immensely successful... is going to get a number of other films and franchises."

Meanwhile, Marvel has another film set to hit theaters on May 16th, 2014, just one month after "Captain America 2." The studio has yet to reveal what the film is, but it may end up being "Ant-Man." Then again, Joss Whedon already said that six heroes was a lot to handle in "The Avengers," which means that the studio will be reluctant to add any more characters to the sequel, unless one of the old ones gets cut.

Well the Avengers movie also goes to show you that you don't need a dark movie like Batman begins or the Dark Knight to be successful.(are you listing Superman and The Mummy people)Or teenagers in love with vampires and werewolves.

I'd be extremely surprised if another hero wasn't added on to the next Avengers movie. We already know Edgar Wright is making an Ant Man film so why wouldn't it be him?

Dinsey was lucky to have The Avengers since John Carter flopped.

The only reasons why The Avengers was successful was because the film had a great director, a great cast and a good story.

Dinsey wasn't the reason why The Avengers was successful.

Adding Ant-Man, hell even adding Wasp, shouldn't be a big stretch for an Avengers 2 roster. These are very tiny tiny characters and don't take up too much space.

@ nawtnt: great cast: yes, great director: yes, good story: ??? if this is a good story, i don't want to know what kind of movies you watch. (btw i liked avengers a lot, but not because of the story.)

Not trying to be rude, but if Whedon thought juggling that many characters was such a HUGE deal, with all the help he had from the animated films and comic books, then perhaps he's not the talented writer I originally thought. In fact, he's starting to look more and more like that douche hack Abrams. Two guys with limited intellect and imagination.

@Cinema

All that has really been confirmed is that Wright turned in an Ant-Man script. No one is really sure if Disney decided to move forward with it. Honestly after Scott Pilgrim, some people might be reluctant to leave a big budget film in Wright's hands. I think that's a dumb decision if there ever was one, but it is one they might come to.

Doctor Strange is rumored to be in the works. I'd be interested to see that.

velocityknown- Ahh right for some reason I thought they had greenlit the film for production. The success of the Avengers could affect the director they choose now thats for sure. I know Edgar Wright has a distinct style which might not match with the rest of the series if they do decide to tie it in. I don't know if you're speaking about Scott Pilgrim negatively because it didn't do that well in the box office but I personally thought it was an amazing film; quirky, good action and CGI and ten times better the second time around. Edgar Wright's proved he can handle a big budget he just might not be understood by everyone.

@ Mink

In defence of Whedon, even with the established mythology it would still be difficult working with such a large number of characters in the spotlight. You also have to make sure you don't alienate non-fans.
minkowski writes:

^^I doubt seriously two more character would make much of a difference, and if Ant Man and Wasp had already had a movie or previous appearance, Joss would have had to include them whether he thought he could do it or not.

y'know buying Marvel doesn't exactly make Disney people geniuses...it just makes the other big studios that much DUMBER.
