Guillermo Del Toro has been talking about bringing HP Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" to the big screen for a while. At one point, Universal Pictures was interested and so was Tom Cruise (lead actor) and James Cameron (producer), but Del Toro refused to back down from an R rating. And since the budget was around $150 million, Universal had no choice but to give up on the project.
Del Toro then took "At the Mountains of Madness" to other studios. But now comes word that the helmer won't purse the film any longer, mostly because Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" is too similar.
"Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical. Both movies seem to share identical set pieces and the exact same BIG REVELATION (twist) at the end," Del Toro revealed. "'Prometheus' started filming a while ago. The title itself gave me pause - knowing that 'ALIEN' was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella. I assumed the Greek metaphor alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, this will probably mark a long pause - if not the demise - of ['At the Mountain of Madness']."

Why would Del Toro take over R. Scott's story when it supposed to be a prequel from the Alien franchise and thus the appropriate context and logic? That doesn't make any sense. Therefore, the R rating issue doesn't seem to be the real problem here.

Del Toro may be right as far the similarities between the two are concerned. Still, I would say that The Thing (and the somewhat lackluster prequel it spawned) also had many similarities with "At the Mountains of Madness" as well and that did not seem to stop him before. It has been a long time since I read the book but, from what I can remember, there seemed to be enough differences to merit going ahead with the project. There is almost zero chance that there will be six foot tall blind penguins in Prometheus.

What's even more of s shame is that Lovecraft wrote some of the best American horror ever, even surpassing King for sheer inventive creepiness, but sadly few of his works have been properly translated into film, even though loose derivations have hit the screen instead.
Regardless, I never got the impression del Toro was serious anyway, but if he wants to do a Lovecraft, there are plenty of stories from which he can craft a movie, so rather than whine at how Prometheus stole his thunder, he should get busy adapting a different tale.
