Universal Pictures to Reboot "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing," with Tom CruiseSubmit Comment
Universal Pictures has signed a two-year production deal with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are best know for writing "Star Trek" and "Transformers." The duo will kick off their new relationship with modern reboots of Universal's "Van Helsing" and "The Mummy" franchises.

At this point, very little is known about the two films, except that Tom Cruise is attached to produce and star in "Van Helsing," which was turned into a film in 2004 with Hugh Jackman (pictured) playing the title character.

"We're thrilled to call Universal Pictures our home," said Kurtzman and Orci. "They really understand the importance of building a strong creative team and giving our shared projects their full support. We're proud to start making movies that will live as part of Universal's enduring legacy."

Ugh! Kurtzman and Orci are two of the sh*ttiest most overhyped and overpaid writers in the industry right now.

Still, I’m intrigued at the prospect of a new Mummy film. They should definitely return to its classic Universal horror roots coupled with the later Hammer incarnations. It’ll never happen but, a vintage atmospheric, R-rated spookfest version would be pretty cool.

Since when is Tom Cruise a fresh face compared to Hugh Jackman..?

Those hack writers are a perfect example of why Hollywood is nothing more than a glorified remedial class for film with each student having been held back at least three times.

hahaha! maybe Tom will be the Mummy! He should definitely play Dracula.

I wouldn't mind a Remake to Van Helsing doh. I think it had alot of potential but I didn't like the direction of the original at all. It's be cool to make it an actual horror thriller and not a family film.

Kurtzman & Orci?! Again with these two?! I refuse to acknowledge they are the only ones able to write blockbluster screenplays...

As for the THE MUMMY reboot, I really think it wouldn't be all bad. The thing is, maybe they should not attach itself to another swashbuckling person/ family. Maybe they could prevent the issues with part 2 & 3 of Fraser's family taking over "drama" of the action flick. It really weighed the movie down. The renoot would have to understand Part 1 really set the bar high...

As for VAN HELSING, I don't think it needed to be rebooted. Jackman was perfect for the role & could be on the continued hunt for other movie monsters like Phantom of the Opera, Creature from Black Lagoon, return of Frankenstein (involve bride aspect), witches, ghouls etc. The choices are endless...

I know part 1 acting was heavy on the "ham with cheese" and it really messed up with Dracula's egg/children plot device, but it also had great action sequences, great Dr Jekyll/Hyde opening & the Frankenstein appearance was fresh and original IMO.

I'm not saying to bring back Johnson, but Jackman & the action was pure popcorn fun. It still has potential for a sequel...Tom Cruise would be OK for it, continuing to prove he is BO gold, but he's got big shoes to fill.

I say to give Jackman another crack at it OR bring him back with Cruise...the two alone would make the movie come out even.

Naw Jackman needs to stick to playing nice guys, musicals or homeless drunks

Ugh, f*ck this sh*t.
Tom Cruise as Helsing? No thanks. Stick to Mission Impossible...oh wait, Brad Bird ain't staying around, thats right. That means it's gonna be sh*t again.

Legit, MI4 was the best one, easily. Bird pulled out something glorious in his rectal cavity and made it shine.

And The Mummy reboot? f*ck OFF. The Brendan Fraser ones are enough.... they suck, but mildly entertaining if you ain't sober.

Tom Cruise as "Van Helsing"?

Normally I would say "no frickin way!" but the shear stupidity of this idea makes me want to see it.

Van Helsing had all the best and the worst elements of Stephen Sommers' movie: great action, great designs, solid characters, looney tunes looking CGI (those werevolves looked like giant rabid transilvanian squirrels) and a bad, bad screenplay.

Reboot with Tom Cruise? Well, that'll be a very different movie, that's for sure. But with Oblivion and All You Need Is Kill it's good to see Tom back in the saddle.

"modern reboots"???

as in, taking these two stories out of their respective time periods and basing them in today's world?

As goofy as Cruise is, it's rare he make a bad movie.. and it wont be difficult to improve on Van Helsing. Even Kate Beckinsale's hotness couldnt make that watchable.
