"The Lorax" Dominates Box Office Weekend

"The Lorax" Dominates Box Office WeekendSubmit Comment
Dr Seuss' "The Lorax" took first place at the domestic box office this weekend, surpassing all expectations by grossing a staggering $70 million, which is the best opening ever for a non-sequel animated film, beating Pixar's "The Incredibles" by $200,000.

The movie broke a bunch of other records, including taking the top opening of 2012, having the best debut of any animated film since summer 2010 when "Toy Story 3" opened to $110 million. And "Lorax" scored the fourth best opening ever for any Universal title.

"The Lorax" cost $70 million to produce and will likely end up grossing over $200 million domestically and possibly the same thing overseas. Unfortunately, the movie has only a 57% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Taking second place was the Warner Bros comedy "Project X," which grossed $20.8 million, also above expectations. The R-rated film cost only $12 million to develop, already becoming a success. The new movie has a 28% fresh rating.

And following its Oscar win, "The Artist" received a bit of a push this weekend, taking tenth place and grossing $3.9 million for a new total of $37.1 million.

I'd rather see 'The Thorax', starring Katy Perry.

They should have pushed Prometheus earler into the year. They have it sandwiched between Avengers and TDKR. Ugh. Guess they think that's a good bald spot on the theater calender...

I wonder if the same people that write the scripts do the marketing...

And this is why they keep making all this childrens garbage. People will go in droves to pay the movie theater to babysit their kids for a while.

Taking second place was the Warner Bros comedy "Project X,"

That's funny, Project X is the name I'm going to give my first born child.
