Denzel Washington Was Actually Waterboarded for "Safe House"Submit Comment
Denzel Washington's "Safe House" thriller is set to hit theaters on Friday (February 10th) and features a scene in which Robert Patrick waterboards the actor. To make it look realistic, Washington agreed to get waterboarded in real life.

"That was actually quite terrifying," said director Daniel Espinosa. "I went up to Denzel and told him, 'Time to go, now is the moment where the stunt guy kicks in,' and he looked at me and he said, 'Let's go.' 'Are you sure?' 'I'm sure.' And I was terrified, but I let him go and I had to watch him do it."

Co-star Ryan Reynold added: "He went all out for this movie. I would definitely not like to be waterboarded. It was intense. Disturbing."

So why did Washington do the stunt himself? "I wanted to see what it would be like," he said. "It's strange. You can't breathe in, because the water comes in, and it's filling up your mouth. And that was just one time for a short time. Imagine having that done for 20, 30 seconds? You will give up the answers. You may not necessarily tell the truth, but you will tell [your captors] whatever they want to hear."

Patrick said that he did some research on waterboarding and was shocked and Washington was willing to put himself through that. "Some of the guys we got, the Taliban guys, they only hung in there for eighteen seconds," he explained. "Denzel lasted five; that's pretty damn good."

Big deal. Did he ever see Geena Davis' torture scene in The Long Kiss Goodnight? Yeah, that's how a woman does it.

As for waterboarding, it's a lot better when you KNOW you're not going to drown. And he has a billion lawyers to protect him, whereas Mohammed has none.

Robert Patrick always gets to do the most fun stuff in movies...beating Arnie's ass, being a pain in the ass to Sly Stallone, and stealing scenes in Die Hard 2, which all of those came to be as "the only actor to be killed by Willis, Stallone and Arnie"

And this is why Denzel is a great performer , willing to be tortured for his art . Torture for Reynolds is a few hours with out some one telling him he was great in Van Wilder. (sarcasm)

I've been in the 69er with a few ladies that were squirters. So I know what it's like to be waterboarded.

Denzel really did that waterboarding crap? Man, this guy really goes method..

I still think this movie has shades of Training Day and 3:10 to Yuma. You know, Denzel being the best of the best of a rogue CIA operative, but Reynolds needs to transport him, while Denzel is messes with his head on the way with the standard "everything is not what it seems.."

The guys will probably be high on ticket sales on sheer star power alone.
