George Lucas Retiring, Takes Credit for "Indiana Jones 4" Fridge Scene

George Lucas Retiring, Takes Credit for "Indiana Jones 4" Fridge SceneSubmit Comment
George Lucas did an interview with NY Times, revealing that he's retiring from Hollywood, adding that he was responsible for the refrigerator scene in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

"I'm retiring, I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff," he said, adding that he'll still be involved with the fifth "Indiana Jones" film.

The newspaper then said that Steven Spielberg accepted the blame for placing Indy in the fridge. "It's not true," replied Lucas. "He's trying to protect me."

The filmmaker went on to explain that he was the one who had to work hard to convince Spielberg to do the scene. After a bit of research, Lucas presented a few facts, claiming that if the refrigerator was lead-lined, and if Indy didn't break his neck when the fridge crashed, and if he was able to get the door open, Indy could, in fact, survive. "The odds of surviving that refrigerator from a lot of scientists are about 50-50," Lucas said.

It was the stupid Alien garbage in this movie that was the problem

His son, Lucasfilm is all I really need anyway. He himself looks like a bloody ewok.

So...will you give us the original Star Wars trilogy untouched on Blu-Ray? Come on, you'll admit the fridge scene but not the horrible, messed-with trilogy you gave us last year?

This is actually an article from 20 years ago, but it was planned to be released after Lucas was able to show how useless he had become.

I didn't have a problem with the fridge scene. I thought it was kind of cool, tbh.
Mutt is the worst part of the movie.

Not even reading the article.

They had me at: 'George Lucas Retiring'

Great, thx. Now mean it and f*ck off George. You over-milking, beating a dead dog... ok, thx. for 'A New Hope, Empire and a bit of Return of the Jedi' -- after that you can blow me.

Pornfly- you beat me to it.

George Lucas, you did something incredible in 1977 but you lost it along the years. Lucas retiring from blockbusters... He did only one by himself in 1977, everything else is either with Spielberg or just because every Star Wars fan wanted another trilogy. And where is he getting this: "Everybody hates me" stuff ? Of course everybody will hate you if fans ask for a sequel trilogy, and they get a prequel crapology. Jar Jar Binks anyone ?
Ranger writes:

He's retiring because he's all used up (clearly). That's why ALL the re-hashing of ALL the re-re-re-releases of Star Wars.

Again, thx. for SW's episodes 4-6 (the ORIGINAL trilogy) George. Bye now. Take care. Don't brush your teeth with a brick.

I heard that Lucas Died shortly after Raiders of the Lost Ark, but Spielburg and Mattel re-animated him with a computer brain programmed to just say "f*ck it, thats a wrap, Star Wars/Indie fans will pay to see it". And "Can we put it in a toy box and sell it?"

So by retiring, they mean re-booting. Its going to take a while to flush all that sh*t out of there.

why would you take credit for anything having to do with that last Indiana Jones movies? THe story sucked and the script was even worse.

Cinemaisdead writes:

When George Lucas made the original Star Wars trilogy he was a nobody. They wouldn't have let him have much control over the projects at all even when he directed A New Hope so it would have been a team effort. Then after the success of the first films with everyone licking his ass hole he probably got surrounded by YES men and nobody told him how sh*t the new trilogy was as he made it. He hasn't directed any other decent films, his name rides on the success of the originals and as far as I'm concerned he retired from Hollywood in 1983.

The only decent thing to come out of the newer films was Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 on PS2. Beautiful games....

@Powdered - he's taking credit to take the heat off his buddy Spielberg.

@Cinema - re: George retired since '83. My thought exactly.

With all due respect George, you should have retired the day after "Return Of The Jedi" hit theatres. Just sayin'...

Right. Spielberg's a scientist now? He's barely a director. He just sis in a chair and counts money. f*ck him, and f*ck you.

BTW, calculate the radiation that would've leaked through the melted rubber door gasket over an interval of even a few seconds, and Indy would have suffered a fatal case of radiation poisoning.

@Crazyhorse

That always got me, too. Everyone harping on the fridge scene (as ridiculous as it was) when the preposterous ending was so much worse in my eyes. I don't mind think the film is bad overall, except for the ending. But hey, who ever said the end of a film is an important part?

minkowski writes:

He's retiring from f*cking up films people once took great pride in enjoying.

Quite an accomplishment to put on the f*cker's tombstone.
catoc writes:

About the fridge scene, for me it is about as plausible/realistic as the plane/life raft scene in TOD but yet no one ever complains about that TOD scene. Why?

I think it has something to do with ageing, i.e. people were much younger when they watched TOD and thought the scene was a bit far fetched but ultimately accepted it.

Jump foward many years, they see the fridge scene in TKOTCS and think that scene is craxy, unrealistic bullsh*t!

They're both unrealistic (although granted the fridge scene more so) so why all the hate for the fridge scene only?
mlodge87 writes:
on January 20th, 2012 at 9:13:20 AM

Actually, Mythbusters proved the life raft scene was plausible. The problem with the refrigerator scene isn't just the fact that it is a complete mockery of physics and realism, but the it's something that should not have been there at all. The movie started off bad and before the audience could overlook how repugnant it was already, they got that scene and it completely disconnected them from the movie. Everyone knows that you can open a fridge from the inside. It's common sense. So couple that with a nuclear explosion, and your brain immediately knows something is wrong. Have there been things in the other movies that are slightly silly? Yes. But since the rest of the movie is so good, your mind stays connected to it. The problem with this movie is that the stupidity level is so high for so long that you can get back into the movie. You just keep getting more and more angry at the ridiculousness of it all.

Having said all that, George saying he is retiring but staying involved in the 5th Indy (which shouldn't even be made) is the worst news since the latest release of modified Star Wars movies.
mlodge87 writes:

I personally think George Lucas' problem is that he just rested his arrogant laurels. Now given, he did the movie biz a great favor with his technical advances such as pioneering what could be considered early CGI, the THX sound system, Skywalker Ranch recording studio, and the world wide billion dollars movies of episode 4-6...success James Cameron could only dream about. Lately, reliving his glory days by basically drawing moustaches on the Mona Lisa of his trilogy masterpiece. He has been since artistically mediocre at best.
The kick to the balls of this is he will not share creative control of his characters of Indy/SW, not even with his frienfs like Spielberg. Only he would dream the plots of what happened to the characters. What was so wrong on passing the torch to future generations to celebrating his characters? He was noted of saying that all the SW/Indy characters die wth him--that egotistical bastard!!
What he should of done is kept directing, kept working of his work or others, and let othets penned stories of his characters he could just signed off on...just ranting, I mean saying...
