Comic-Con Co-Founder Dead at 59Submit Comment
Richard Alf, one of the co-founders of the San Diego Comic-Con and the founder of the Comic Kingdom shop in San Diego's North Park area, has died from cancer at age 59. He was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in December.

Back in 1970, Alf joined a group of volunteers to start the annual convention celebrating comic books. According to fellow Comic-Con co-founder Mike Towry, Alf also put up a few thousand dollars to pay for the convention during the first three years.

The first Comic-Con was a mild success. But in 2011, it attracted 125,000 people, including filmmakers and casts from such films as "The Twilight Saga," "The Hunger Games," and "Cowboys and Aliens."

Alf is survived by his mother.

RIP to you Richard Alf, one of the co-founders of the San Diego Comic-Con and the founder of the Comic Kingdom shop in San Diego's North Park area. You have created awareness for new people to be aware of comics and the importance of it.

I remember small-time comic conventions in the late 70's, early 80's. They were fun (I even made small fortunes at them). But these guys took it to a new level... good on them. RIP.
