"Akira" Film May Finally be Dead

Posted: January 6th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Akira" Film May Finally be DeadSubmit Comment
Warner Bros has been working on a live-action "Akira" film for years, but budget issues have constantly kept it from going into production. At one point, Albert Hughes was on board to direct a $180 million adaptation.

The budget was cut in half to $90 million, which resulted in losing Hughes, but gaining actors Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham Carter. But the studio still decided that the price tag was too high.

The goal now is to bring the budget down to $60 million. If the script cannot be altered to reflect the lower price, the project may end up being shelved forever. Meanwhile, production officers in Vancouver are being closed, and all the talent and crew are told to stop working and go home.

I am just as glad as anyone else, this is a gift from above, but some aspects still makes me angry. Because why would they want to make a remake if they don't even believe in the project? 60 millions? Have they even seen the original? That wouldn't have gone very far.

Now, let us all pray that this project stays dead.

How much a commitment was it if they cut the budget in half? Just goes to show the zero faith they have. So just don't make. Balls up and admit that this was a bad idea from jump and move on to your hopes of trashing a different iconic masterpiece.

@TT

It's just an old Japanese anime classic that shouldn't be messed with IMO.

They won't let it go, people. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but this film WILL get made one day, as long as they have the money to do it.

The thing that gets me is, why the hell would they think they can make this film for 60 mil? lol. Either put up some cash to sell it right, or fuggedaboutit.

And here's another thing. In 1988, Akira cost 11 mil to make. Today, the budget would be ~20 mil, a third of what WB is wanting for the live-action film.

Yeah, sure computers might make Akira cheaper to make now, but still...20 mil is 1/3 of 60 mil. And the former is a cartoon, the latter live-action.

What they need to do, to see if anyone is interested, is remake Akira ala the newish Appleseed. I'd love to see how cel-shaded 3D could visually improve Akira. We don't need a live action anyway.

Its all keanus doing. He was supposed to be in it. When he got booted he focused his great intellect and strong Hollywood pull to sabotage this production

Just make more copies and a new definition transfer for the old one. No need to rape this classic..... f*ck it Hollywood!!!!!

Why is everyone so excited about this news...they want to take it from being "ill check it out definately because I'm fan" to what most people thought of dragonball....which is something like "ill just wait until they get it right 10 years from now" ...if u want to see the future of live action anime, check out the gaiking trailer, or Gantz for that matter, but once hearing of a 180mil budget there is no acceptable compromise...just stick to animes that have a main character that can be played by a white dude, like cowboy bebop, and let the rest come to James Cameron in a dream.
