It's Official: Wolverine is NOT Human!

Marvel's X-Men have always represented the next step in human evolution. Normal kids would discover around puberty age that they have a certain power and would normally hide it out of fear of being different.

Prejudice against people with mutations is a central theme in the "X-Men" movies, and very often, the US government is behind all the discrimination. But in real life, the US government considers the X-Men human while Marvel is the one claiming that there is nothing human about their characters.

It turns out that when you import products, the taxation is different for dolls (human representations) and toys (monsters, robots, aliens, etc...). In fact, dolls are taxed at 12%, while toys are taxed at only 6.8%.

In order to save money, Marvel set out to prove that the characters in the X-Men universe are NOT human, and thus are NOT dolls. Sure, they have heads, arms, legs, a torse, hair, but unlike humans, Beast is blue. This litigation went back and forth for close to ten years. Finally, the US government acknowledged that Beast cannot be human, but was then also convinced that Wolverine is not human and neither are the rest of heroes that Marvel owns.

You can listen to the entire Radiolab podcast below, which has "X-Men" director Bryan Singer joining the discussion. Let us know if you believe a character like Wolverine is human or something else.

If a chimp shares 99% of its genetic material with a human, and yet remains something other than human, than none of the X-men are human either.

Then again, most of them look human, whereas a chimp does not.

But really, what a stupid-assed way for Marvel to save some money.

Why has no one pointed out that people actually argued about something as miniscule as whether or not the X-Men are human for ten years?

Can't we all just get along :) lol.

Who care's except the die hard fanboys if he's human or not.

But this 'argument' was worth millions of $ in Marvel's pocket if they won their case not having to pay those extra taxes. Although, by the X-Men's very own storyline, about they all being born from human parents. If Marvel won a case that goes against everything they themselves have been professing, I'll suspect someone within the judiciary system has been paid-off.

They are very clearly stated as being mutant, not human.

Oh the sweet irony. And to think of all that work Professor X did
in trying to get people and mutants to live together.

So the government argued about whether x-men are human or not for 10 years... sounds about right.

Just wait till I get a job in customs. Then ill just make a deal for them to send halle berry and Anna paquin over to "persuade" me to switch the tax categories in the computer for the shipment. Halle berry is quite fiesty and Anna...just look at that mouth on her. She def looks like she could throw some sass while going all 8 pound oreck xl on me. Great combo ;)

X-Men are human, but X-Men are not homo-sapien. Tax it like you'd tax an Austrailopithecus figure.
