"The Dark Knight Rises" Trailer Shatters RecordsSubmit Comment
Back in October, "The Avengers" trailer was released online and was viewed a whopping 10 million times on iTunes in the first 24 hours, smashing all previous records.

Then on December 19th, Warner Bros unveiled the trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises," which surpassed "The Avengers" and became the most viewed trailer of all time with 12.5 million views. Watch it here.

The new movie stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It is set to hit theaters on July 20th, 2012.

It's a good trailer, I agree. Promtheus should have been the one to break records though, because that's a real film, whereas TDKR, while looking good, and not entirely off my must-watch list, is still just comic book crap, whereas Prometheus explores real ideas, albeit ideas one should probably consider very carefully.

TDKR: no ideas, just some Predator faced guy you can't understand, Anne Hathaway looking good while sucking cinematic ass, and Bale being that guy in the black plastic beating up bad guys under a diffuse mid-day sky.

No surprise. The teaser was pretty damn good at showing off the aesthetic and vibe of the movie without giving too much away in terms of action and plot. Definitely looking forward to this movie more than any other of next year.

Prometheus also looks pretty damn fantastic. Another brilliant teaser, IMO. It's nice that we're getting a lot of blockbuster-type movies that actually have something relevant to say. 2012 is gonna rock cinematically. I'm stoked.

"TDKR: no ideas, just some Predator faced guy you can't understand, Anne Hathaway looking good while sucking cinematic ass, and Bale being that guy in the black plastic beating up bad guys under a diffuse mid-day sky."

I don't disagree with his preferences for movies, I'm sure prometheus will be great (albeit horrendously slow moving because ol' Ridley moves like a snail) but he has no ability to appreciate a film for its other aspects (perhaps a film with especially good visuals but no plot, or a truly immersive story with sh!tty effects)

My god, really? You really think that? Two films unseen, both works of fiction, one likely to have political undertones that parallel current events, and another, high-concept film (depending on whether or not it actually explores the concepts, rather than just raise them), likely to pose more philosophical questions.

I really hope you're just a troll Mink, because then I can just excuse all of this as the usual crap that comes with being one. The alternative is just that you're stupid.

Which would you prefer?

pretty embarrassing of Scott to go back to the well (because continued story arcs from films that were relevant years ago are in demand right Ridley?) You pretty much get two reactions after the Prometheus trailer airs: "uh, ok" and a lot of eye rolling at another attempt to revisit a dead franchise.

his rants about it seem childish and he just doesnt appreciate that mans work of genius.

TDKR: no ideas, just some Predator faced guy you can't understand, Anne Hathaway looking good while sucking cinematic ass, and Bale being that guy in the black plastic beating up bad guys under a diffuse mid-day sky."

You are being a little unfair to TDKR, and your logic that somehow comic book movies can't explore "real" ideas is unfounded. I am going to assume your "real" ideas are moral/societal and not literal or technological since Prometheus takes place in space with imagined technology (Hardly real). Movies can ask questions and suggest answers in any setting, and many times fictional worlds or impossible settings are used as a way of expressing "real" ideas. Prometheus will almost certainly do this, but there is nothing about TDKR which makes it inherently incapable of doing so. Nolan's blockbusters aren't as mindless as Micheal Bay's, and Batman Begins did a fairly good job of exploring the societal issues that can breed criminal behavior, and the relationship between justice and revenge. The Dark Knight explored a number of ideas but I think the most important was the Bat Sonar subplot (especially relevant today) of whether it was moral for Wayne to have the cell phone spying technology he created. Comic Book movies can have ideas if done properly, look at Watchmen, and hopefully Prometheus explores more of the issues with weapons (what the aliens are) and genetics. My impression from TDKR trailer is that it is going to get into social inequality in some way, that is an idea (Batman Begins touched on this theme too, remember the free public transportation WE built).

I can't wait for Prometheus, it has definitely passed TDKR for level of anticipation this summer. That said, these are two of my favorite directors and Nolan has never made a bad film (especially true when he or his brother is writing). Prometheus's success is largely going to hinge on whether it is R or not; it might make more money at PG 13 but not nearly as good. I love the Alien films and the ideas behind them (the underlying theme of arms races and how weapons destroy their creators) and I hope Prometheus can really expand upon that like some of the early Alien 3 scripts did (the series kind of got derailed after that, tho 3 isn't a bad movie when the deleted scenes are put back in and the plot starts making sense).'

Anyway, there is no reason for two good movies to need to compete,

He's done nothing but earn all the hate. He's probably spending the next week writing out his gripping novel of a comeback for all the comments. Here's a breakdown of what to expect:
-2,000 words devoted to him on his high horse. He's from an "older generation," so clearly he's more intelligent than the rest of us. He'll be sure to tell us that.

-6,500 words devoted to the breakdown of each individual comment made against him, which of course he'll have to quote in his response.

-1,800 words devoted to calling us all "Nolan fanboys." Because, according to him, enjoying the Nolan Batman movies means we are simply incapable of enjoying films at all.

-four misused quotes from Pascal that he had to Google. They make him sound smart and special...

-seven Star Trek references (because somehow it's relevant).

-He will wrap it all up by pointing out that he inspired all of this conversation so he MUST be important. He will call us "youtube idiots" or something to that effect. He will then leave his computer, turn to his mother (who just got done brushing his hair), and then blow his load in her face (nightly routine). She will then tuck him in and he will drift quickly into dreamland.
