Christopher Nolan Won't Fix Bane's Voice in "The Dark Knight Rises"

Posted: December 20th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Christopher Nolan WonSubmit Comment
We recently showed you script pages from "The Dark Knight Rises" opening scene after fans started complaining that Bane's mask makes him hard to understand. Apparently Warner Bros is very aware of the sound issue, with one film worker claiming to be "scared to death" about "the Bane problem."

"The Dark Knight Rises" will likely be the studio's highest grossing film of 2012, which is why they approached Christopher Nolan about adjusting the sound. But the director said that he will only alter the sound slightly, and will not re-work it completely.

"Chris wants the audience to catch up and participate rather than push everything at them," said a Warner Bros executive. "He doesn't dumb things down. You've got to pedal faster to keep up."

So not dumbing things down means not adjusting a villains voice so the audience can properly hear his dialogue? Wow. Must be high noon in Pretension Land over at Warner Brothers.

I can see his point.

Just hope he might of learnt from the "Batman" voice fiasco in "TDK"

Nolan has already caved in. He said he'd adjust the voice... only 'slightly.' As slightly is subjective. He's spinning this to cover his ass showing he can't be pushed around, but at the end of the day he's still adjusting it.

I really didn't even find Bane's voice that hard to understand. Dont see what the big deal is here.

I understood Bane fine when I watched the bootlegged version of the prologue. That is to say he spoke clearly and the volume of his voice was fine. I don't think it needs adjusting.

News flash for you, Sally, you actually didn't understand sh*t. That wasn't a recipe for homemade cookies Bane was telling.

Good. I love Chris Nolans ideas on things. If people are too stupid to understand what hes saying right away thats there problem. I had no problem hearing him when it was filmed on a phone on the bootleg, and he doesn't sound as menacing in the hd trailer having a more normal sounding voice. Keep the automated mask voice as it is.
holtlt writes:

It ain't matter, it can't be harder than Jeff Bridges' voice in True Grit, some viewers are just lazy enough to improve their hearing issues
october_midnight writes:
on December 20th, 2011 at 11:51:17 PM

It's more the idea of average American audiences (and let's be honest, the general population) being lazy and dumb as f*ck. The only way someone couldn't make it out is if the majority of the words were going in one ear and out the other...not surprising. This is why your country makes movies like 'The Fast and The Furious' money machines.

sh*t blowing up and going fast? Yay.

Well since most people have only seen the trailer, and if they haven't seen the first 6 minutes in theaters and only the bootleg copy, everyone is over reacting. The dude is wearing a mask its gonna be a little muffled.
Sinestro writes:
on December 21st, 2011 at 2:31:50 AM

There's a difference between adjusting the sound and "fixing" his voice. He isn't completely unintelligible. He can't be expected to have Hardy redo the dialogue, but that doesn't mean he is not going to adjust the sound so motherf*ckers can hear Bane clearly. It's not caving in, it's working wit his audience. It's not like it was his artistic vision to have Bane sound like an old diesel engine.

Kill-the-director writes:

I heard bane fine. It's going to be hard to understand him in a trailer that is mashing action sequences and soundtrack with the bane clips. The only thing I would do if I was nolan is increase the volume of banes voice.
SeWerin writes:
on December 21st, 2011 at 4:53:06 AM

I don't see how ability to hear Bane has anything to do with intelligence.

If you did hear clearly, then good for you. But it's obviously that majority didn't. And clearing voice a bit so that character can be understood is not dumbing down - it's simple sound editing.

Some of you need to stop sucking Nolans d*ck and accept that he acts like a pretentious douche here.

Not that it matters much, the movie will be fully subtitled in my cinema
Adamtheflash writes:

Agreed kill and Sinestro. Not all of Bane's dialogue is going to have theatrical score behind it. It would be ridiculous to believe that the sound team won't adjust anything, or have Hardy dub over some of his lines. No one dubs the whole script, but most films hit the sound studio after filming.

This quote is from an anonymous "Warner Bros Exec," not from Nolan himself....yeah okay douche

@ Mink
I'll take your word on Nolan being pretensious. You are the foremost expert on the term, along with hypocrisy.

@ October_Midnight
Just stop. We've all heard the "your country" (implying the US) comments before. We all know that your country is superior! *wild internet sarcasm*

The last Fast and the Furious movie made $416,300,000 internationally, almost double what it made in the states. Not too shabby.

As so many have no problem hearing Bane's voice, we'll assume then that those asked that did have a problem with it are the same douche-bags that talks so much during a movie, by the time they ask the person next to them what was just said, they miss the current line being spoken, thus the idiocy repeats itself.

Sat a few chairs away from a couple (of what I don't know) in the theater. She would yap. He'd fill her in (and not in the fun way, IF you get my meaning?), then she'd miss the next line, she's ask AGAIN what did he say? I spoke up and said: 'If you'd shut your f*cking mouth you wouldn't have to ask him what's been said after every line!'

Peter Parker writes:

@ vincere01:

Although I appreciate your post, I disagree with what you said regarding the choice of words.
Using it as an adjective, as I have, and not as an adverb, the superlative form, "stupidest", is, in fact, a current word.

I confess, I had to look it up to confirm, but my initial choice of words was correct.
Here's the link, should you like to verify:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/stupid

But thank you, though. (And I'm not just being sarcastic.)

Cheers.
minkowski writes:

Americans say 'stupidest', while the rest of the world's educated English-speaking populace says 'most stupid'.

alas, Americans are quite indolent and thus they'll render anything into an abomination if it means they can work less and drink, eat and f*ck more.
