"Sherlock Holmes 2" Tops Disappointing Box Office Weekend

"Sherlock Holmes 2" Tops Disappointing Box Office WeekendSubmit Comment
"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" topped the domestic box office this weekend, but only grossed $40 million, compared to $62 million that the first installment earned two years ago.

"We never had any intention of replicating those grosses," said Warner Bros. "We have 9 days before we get to Christmas, and we will have substantial box office revenues by the time we get there. We will get to where we ended up with the first movie."

Taking second place was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," a third installment in the franchise. The new film grossed $23.5 million on a $75 million budget. That is about half of what the first two movies earned during their opening weekends.

The other new release of the weekend was "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," which opened in 425 theaters, mostly IMAX. The fourth installment grossed $13 million, which was good enough for third place. The film, which cost $140 million to make, will now open wide on Wednesday (December 21st). Overseas it already grossed $68 million.

Agreed Young Chris, not bad at all.

Since Kim Jong-il is dead will we ever see a Team America sequel?

the first one was made a year after 'Iron Man' and Downy Jr.'s seemed more attractive to audience back then.'Iron Man 2' sucked as well as 'due date' so there you go...

Two future dead 'franchises': Chipmunks and Sherlock Holmes.

Excuses, excuses, excuses, Warner blaming because Christmas is coming this saturday.... cīmon. Two years ago, Sherlock play in christmas day and was the blockbuster of the holidays. The real deal, is the Sherlock 2 is isnīt good as the first one. And I sorry to say this, but Iīm afraid with the Avengers release.... Robbie has already ruin Iron Man and Sherlock sequel, what about the Avengersŋ?

^ What?

Its not a bad opening but its softer because Downy doesn't have the same publicity momentum behind him like he did the first time. Meanwhile, Jude Law is happy to be in anything, including his kids' Nanny.
