The Joker Creator Jerry Robinson Dead at 89

The Joker Creator Jerry Robinson Dead at 89Submit Comment
Jerry Robinson, who helped create the Joker as well as Batman sidekick Robin, has died at the age of 89, less than a month from his 90th birthday.

Robinson was hired at the age of 17 to work for the studio of Batman creator Bob Kane. He was later hired by DC Comics. According to lore, he was the one who suggested the name of Robin for a teen character that was to be Batman's sidekick. And while Kane and Robinson offered different views on the creation of the Joker, many comic historians say Robinson's role cannot be disputed.

"Jerry Robinson illustrated some of the defining images of pop culture’s greatest icons," said artist and DC Entertainment co-publisher Jim Lee. "As an artist myself, it's impossible not to feel humbled by his body of work. Everyone who loves comics owes Jerry a debt of gratitude for the rich legacy that he leaves behind."

Wow. So much interest.

So the guy came up with a teen character using the first five letters of his last name?

Clever.

Not a bad creation to be known for (Joker).

R.I.P

joker is one of the(if not THE) most popular villain in comic book history, that is pretty much a fact. in my opinion he is one of the best villains period. it's sad i suppose, but he was 89, this isn't exactly a tragedy. still ... R.I.P.

He did do the Joker, and I love Batman's nemesis, so...yay.

Heath Ledger was nothing like the Joker. He had some ugly garish clothes and green hair and killed some people.

Big deal. I did worse once Halloween during a DUI.

Heath Ledger's Joker was the best to ever be portrayed. Prove. Me. Wrong.

Love your post Mink, but Heath (dead or alive... it's not sympathy from me), did a FAB. job as The Joker.

Joker is the greatest archvillian in any genre. I even put him above the Superman / Lex relationship that I'm sure everyone would vote as #1.
He's the perfect villain as he is the polar opposite but at the same time just the same as Batman. He has no powers, no true training in any martial arts, disfigured but yet he manages to go toe to toe with Batman and has hordes of devoted followers. Like Batman, he does so much with so little (other than resources)compared to other villains. Even Lex gets a power suit here and there and some supernatural powers on occasion.
And as for Robin, he's essentially the blueprint for sidekicks. The average person couldn't name 2 other sidekicks beyond naming Robin and even comic fans would name him first.
So to have a major hand in creating the best fictional character ever as well as THE sidekick all other sidekicks are compared to, I tip my hat to the man and give a well deserved R.I.P.

Ranger: he did a 'fab job' playing what Nolan wanted him to play, but what Nolan wanted him to play wasn't the Joker.

I can tell, brother, you don't read much Batman in graphic novel/comic book form.
