Discuss: Should Oscars Add "Best Comedy" Category?Submit Comment
LA Times caught up with director Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The Forty Year Old Virgin), who said that the Academy Awards needs a Comedy category, because comedic films tend to be ignored by the Oscars.

"There should be a comedy category at the Oscars. Comedy is not included ever," he said. "Five times in a zillion years that it's won Best Picture. It doesn't seem like it's screwing up 'Schindler's List' for 'The Hangover' to have its own category. It didn't mess up the animation people to do it."

He went on to say that making someone laugh can be incredibly difficult. "I so wish we didn't have jokes in these movies, I would have so much less to do if all it was, was characters in conflict. And never go: 'How come we're not getting a laugh in this scene?' That takes all the time. Any movie with no laughs will probably take half as long."

In other words, Apatow believes that the Oscars either need to start recognizing comedies or give comedies their own category, similar to what is currently being done with animated films, which can win both Best Animated Film and Best Picture awards.

Question: Do you think Oscars should add a Best Comedy category?

Yes (short answer).

But I doubt many of these judges have a sense of humor.

And the Oscar's is ABSOLUTELY the WORST for their politics in picking their winners.... so, BLOW ME (long answer).

they should add brain to the oscars.how the f*ck did 'social network' win best soundtrack over the brilliant 'inception'?

No.

Last thing I want to see is 'Meet the Grandfockers' or 'Hangover 12' winning an Oscar.

Next he will want a best supporting actress in a comedy section

(cough cough Leslie Mann)

MADEA GETS DIABETES!!!

What was the last comedy released that deserved to win the best picture award out of curiosity ??
Taco writes:

Animated movies have a category so they shouldnt be able to win best picture too. Because it's not a picture! It's animated, created artificially, nothing was photographed! They had all the time and ability to get it perfect. No waiting for lights or weather or actors performance, etc. So f*ck you Oscar!
Taco writes:
on November 22nd, 2011 at 4:16:27 AM

And as for comedy.. Well hell, why not all genres! How bout best action movie huh? Give John Woo some love! No Mr. Apetow, your unfunny penis showing movies shouldn't get a category any more than best cancer movie for 50/50.
Johnnyb writes:

Never in your life Apatow you will see that happen!!!!! The Oscar is serious sh*t who treat movies with respect (even we all know that the nomination not always, better say, always are screw up from my favorite choices) and start seen comedy in this one, is not gonna make the Oscars much better..... So no, there you got your answer!!!!!!
SeWerin writes:
on November 22nd, 2011 at 5:44:57 AM

No. Because you would then need to give Oscars to best fantasy, sports movie, thriller, action, and so and so.....
boogiel writes:
on November 22nd, 2011 at 6:06:13 AM

Nah, they should have best superhero movies category instead.
triggax writes:

TT. I probably would have given it to Tropic Thunder. But if you've got a good enough comedy it's not like it goes unnoticed look at woody allen. Or In Bruges recently. That was oscar worthy. It really depends I suppose. Mira Sorvino won an oscar for playing a wise crackin' prostitute.. Downey jr was nominated for tropic thunder. Judd apatow has yet to do anything that spectacular.

True dat!!!
Serpico1988 writes:

No for god's sake. Abolish this academy award business altogether !! Because if The Social network won best picture over INCEPTION and Chicago won best picture over GANGS OF NEW YORK, then ya'll sh*ts don't know much about good films :S

Leave awards for these categories to golden globes and MTV. Oscars dont need it.
markoz writes:

Yes,but that brings out other complications like then they should add best comedy director, best comedy actor etc.

Yea a brain and some common sense

When is a really good movie going to win an oscar

It should also be
Best Action Movie Category,
Best Horror Movie Category,
and Best...
Hey! It's not Oscar!
secondbest writes:

There shouldn't be. If there were, then they would have to split up the other movies by genre - best drama, best thriller/suspense, best action film, etc.
hollafoadolla writes:
on November 22nd, 2011 at 3:26:05 PM

@ Ranger. You're right. They would give it to some lame ass "comedy" movie that is family friendly. They would never give it to something like Role Models (underrated!) or basically any comedy with fart and pu**y jokes.
SoftimusPrime writes:

If there's going to be a category for comedy, then logically there should also be categories for horror, scifi and action as well. Right?

I'm strongly against the whole idea, since success in all these categories is heavily subjective. What's funny to some might be ultimate boredom to someone else. The same with horror.

Besides, what kind of films would Apatow like to see as nominees? "Funny People"?!

Maybe the whole idea comes from him realizing that this is the only way someone like him will EVER win the f**king thing!

Comedies sometimes win best picture but I don't think they should. Because they are never "best" as far as movies go. I'd like to see a LOT more comedic actors winning Best Actor though because I think it takes a lot more work to do a seriously funny comedy than to do a drama.
trailertrash writes:

Trig-

Great call on In Bruges love that movie, At least that year had a worthy winner in No Country For Old Men IMO

Early Michael Keaton in Night Shift and Beetlejuice deserved an oscar nod i thought he was very funny in those movies

Funny the only best picture winner i've never seen over the past 20 odd years is Shakespeare In Love which is a comedy right ....

No.

Now shut up Whiny Baby.

Some people don't cater to your whims.

And even if there was a Comedy Category at the Oscars, you'd never win it.

Unless the Academy Awards decided to included a Best Big Fat Whiny Baby Award or a Best Judd Apatow movie Category.

Yeah writing jokes is a hard thing to do...no not really, certainly not harder than every other type of writing.
