"The Smurfs" Writers to Pen 3D "Popeye" MoviePosted: November 3rd, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Sony Pictures Animation has hired "The Smurfs" writers Jay Scherick and David Ronn to pen a brand new animated "Popeye" movie, which will be in 3D.
"Scherick and Ronn have a remarkable talent in re-energizing beloved characters," said Sony. "As they demonstrated with 'The Smurfs,' they embrace the iconic characteristics of these timeless characters and craft a story that really engages moviegoers today."
The plot is being kept under wraps, but Popeye's love interest Olive Oyl, nemesis Bluto and adopted child Swee'Pea will be part of the adventure. The new version is said to cover the themes of friendship, love, greed and life, and focus on human strengths and human frailties.

I loved The Smurfs as a kid so I snuck into watch a bit of the new movie. It was offensive and awful. When it was true to the source, it was actually pretty fun which makes the rest of it that much more painful to watch. My hope is that it was a case of the studio trying to make it more appealing to adults (or people with no taste) and that the writers actually have some talent. The original Popeye movie, with Robin Williams, is a guilty pleasure movie so I'm just hoping they capture a little bit of what makes that movie so bizarrely fun.

The Smurfs is being called a awful movie so maybe a Popeye movie will worse than that.
